Abstract:: Benjamin Sharp (1858-1915), a zoologist who was primarily affiliated with the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, attended Swarthmore College (1876) and earned a M.D. and Ph. D. from the University of Pennsylvania. A birthright member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), Dr. Sharp was the son of Benjamin and Hannah B. (Leedom) Sharp of the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pa. He was married to Virginia May of Ridley, Mass. The family moved to Massachusetts in the early 20th century, and Dr. Sharp served as Representative for Nantucket to the Massachusetts Legislature. The collection consists primarily of correspondence from friends and colleagues, memorabilia from Swarthmore College, and family materials, including the diary of Rebecca Sharp.

Abstract:: Daniel L. McKinley (1925-2010) was a biology professor and historian of natural history. The Daniel McKinley book research files on natural history, 1963-1999, consist mostly of article reprints and an associated card file, but also feature biographical files on historically important naturalists. Featured in McKinley's biographical research are "the father of American botany" John Bartram (1699-1777) and his son, naturalist William Bartram (1739-1823).

Abstract:: John Bartram (1699-1777), the "Father of American Botany," created a botanic garden in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that is widely considered the first true botanic collection in North America. In 1891 the City of Philadelphia purchased his estate as a historic site, and the John Bartram Association--primarily constituted of his descendants--was established in 1893 to help with the administration and interpretation of the property. The John Bartram Association collection on the Bartram family, 1768-2012, includes various materials created by or on the subject of John Bartram (1699-1777) and his descendants. It includes some original and many copies of Bartram family documents, photographs, book research, genealogical research, and plant information.

Abstract:: Morgan Hebard, Jr. (1921-2000) of Philadelphia was a naturalist and photographer who served as president of the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association. His parents were renowned entomologist Morgan Hebard (1887-1946) and Margaret Champlin Perry Claxton, granddaughter of the artist John La Farge (1835-1910). The Morgan Hebard, Jr. Collection, late 19th century-1990, mostly consists of genealogical materials on Hebard's family. It also contains some prints of works by La Farge.

Abstract:: Graceanna Lewis (1821-1912) was a published scholar, naturalist, lecturer, abolitionist and social reformer. This collection contains research and lecture notes on a variety of topics including: botany, ornithology, crystallography, mineralogy, zoology, ichthyology, embryology, neurology, and chemistry. There are botanical illustrations, leaf and ornithology charts, prints and sketches depicting the classification of the animal and plant kingdoms, and botanical sketches on wood blocks. In addition to scientific notes, there are notes and lectures depicting her views on the abolition of slavery, women's equality, and the force of nature and its place in the universe.
