Gorgas Mill Complex records, 1964-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection, the Gorgas Mill Complex records, includes documents from the Monastery archaeological site, on the Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The excavation site was an 18th-century mill site which later became part of Fairmount Park. It was excavated in 1974 by the field school of the Penn Museum under the direction of Jeff Kenyon. This collection was divided into four series based on subject: administrative records, historical research, field notes and visual materials.

Abstract:
Globe Dye Works, established in 1865 by Richard Greenwood and William Bault, was a textile dying plant located in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania specializing in the bleaching and dying of yard and thread. The plant was owned and operated by the Greenwood family until its closure in 2005. The Globe Dye Works records, 1865-2005, consist of financial and administrative records, employee records, board and stockholder meeting minutes, maps, scrapbooks, photographs, photograph albums, property documents relating to the ownership and sales of the Globe Dye Works and Greenwood family properties, and other materials.

Abstract:
Dr. Douglas Macfarlan (1887-1966) was a resident of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and a physician. He was also an avid local historian who served as president of the Lower Merion Historical Society, and contributed articles and drawings to Main Line Times in addition to publishing several historical monographs. The Notes and Drawings by Dr. Douglas Macfarlan, 1937-1964, consist of research notes, newspaper clippings, copies of articles, and original and copied photographs for various historical monographs by Macfarlan.

Eleanor Morris papers on the Mill at Anselma, 1971-1999 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Eleanor May Morris (1919-2011) was an advocate for conservation of open space and farm land and preservation of historic buildings in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1967, she co-founded with her husband the French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust (FPCCT) and served as its president for thirty years. She was also a founding member of the Mill at Anselma Preservation and Educational Trust (MAAPET). The Eleanor Morris papers on the Mill at Anselma, 1971-1999, consist of records from FPCCT and MAAPET from Eleanor Morris' home office. The files relate to the Anselma Mill, including FPCCT's acquisition of its property and buildings in the early 1980s, the establishment of Mill at Anselma as an historic site, and the formation of MAAPET in 1998.

Abstract:
The Mill at Anselma (Chester County, Pennsylvania) was built in 1747 by Samuel Lightfoot to produce flour and animal feed. Its chain of private ownership, including the Oberholtzer and Simmers families, ended with the Collins family in 1982. After the passing of Oliver Collins, the mill was turned into an historic site. The Mill at Anselma Preservation and Educational Trust collection, 1844-2007, includes original manuscripts from previous owners of the Mill at Anselma, oral histories, photographs, blueprints of the mill and property, newspaper clippings, and other materials relating to the Mill at Anselma and surrounding locations.

The Reading family is one of the oldest families in Hatboro Township, Pennsylvania, dating back to about 1780. Thomas Reading operated several mills in the Hatboro area in the mid-19th century, and members of his family also operated a general store. The Reading family ledgers, 1831-1910, includes two ledgers for several mills operated by Thomas Reading, 1856-1874, and four day-books for a general store operated by the Reading family, 1831-1881.

Concord Flour Mills records, 1867-1941 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Newlin Grist Mill was built in Delaware County, Pennsylvania in 1704 by Nathaniel Newlin. After changing hands and changing names several times, it was acquired by Samuel N. Hill, who operated it as Concord Flour Mills. Concord Flour Mills ceased operations in 1943, and subsequently reopened as an historic site around 1960. The Concord Flour Mills records, 1867-1941, consist mostly of financial records of Concord Flour Mills with some scattered Samuel N. Hill papers.

Nicholas Newlin Foundation records, 1959-2013 (bulk) 1834-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Newlin Grist Mill was built in Delaware County, Pennsylvania in 1704 by Nathaniel Newlin, a Quaker settler who came to Pennsylvania in 1683 with his father Nicholas. It changed hands and names several times before ceasing operations in 1943. E. Mortimer Newlin, a descendant of Nicholas and Nathaniel Newlin, purchased the mill in 1956 and began renovating it; in 1960 he established the Nicholas Newlin Foundation, a nonprofit corporation which took title of the property and opened it as an historic site. The Nicholas Newlin Foundation records, 1834-2013 (bulk 1959-2013), consist largely of paper documents with information on board and staff members, financial information, information on buildings and grounds, on public relations and programming, and other aspects of the organization. Society for the Preservation of Old Mills collection, 1972-2013 (bulk) 1900-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The SPOOM collection is a product of the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills, a national organization founded in 1972 whose goal is to promote interest in old mills. Most of the items that comprise the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills collection, 1900-2013 (bulk 1972-2013), were previously housed in the former SPOOM archives. The collection consists of gathered information on mills by state, SPOOM institutional records and miscellaneous information now cataloged as subject files. The collection is also comprised of publications and several objects. A sub-collection known as the Esther Middlewood collection is also a part of SPOOM and consists of information gathered by the editor of the SPOOM publication Old Mill News. The Stephen Straight collection is another sub-collection within SPOOM. The Dominick Kass collection is part of SPOOM as well and consists of Old Mill News issues and information on mills by state.
