Abstract:: This collection contains two volumes of lectures notes of Charles Michael, a Philadelphia medical student, dating from 1829 to 1831. One volume covers notes from a course on midwifery taught by a Dr. Handy. The other volume contains notes from the theory and practice of medicine by J.H. Miller, M.D. Not much is known about Charles Michael. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

The lecture notes themselves are not limited to Materia Medica in the strictest sense, in that they also include some information about physiology, pathology and therapeutics. The notebook is briefly inscribed by Dr. Edward Cutbush (1772-1843) an officer and surgeon in the United States Navy.

Abstract:: This book of notes on Materia Medica, written in Latin, is neither signed nor dated and contains relatively little contextualizing information. Approximately the first third of the book (through page 80) consists of medical receipts, while the rest of the text contains an alphabetized list of medicinal substances, most of which are plants, though some mineral and animal products are described as well. The term 'Materia Medica' refers to the collected body of knowledge of medicinal substances and their therapeutic applications.

Abstract:: This notebook contains lecture material transcribed by two different students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. One portion of the volume contains notes taken by Hiester H. Muhlenberg in 1832; the later material was written by Wellington Smith Mason during two separate courses of lectures between 1894 and 1895. The notes taken by Muhlenberg record a series of lectures delivered by Dr. Nathaniel Chapman on hemorrhages, fevers, cardiac disease and nervous disorders. The notes taken by Mason, decades later, document Dr. Judson Daland's lectures on physical diagnosis and Dr. J.K. Mitchell's lectures on symptomatology.

Wistar and Horner Museum records, 1822-1865 (inclusive) 1845-1855 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Wistar and Horner Museum was originally founded as the Wistar Museum in the early 19th century by Caspar Wistar, chair of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine. In 1818, shortly before his death, Wistar appointed William Edmonds Horner, Dean of the Medical Faculty and professor of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania, as curator of the Wistar Museum. At that time, the combined collections of Wistar and Horner became known as the Wistar and Horner Museum. Dr. Joseph Leidy succeeded Horner as curator of the museum in 1847, and contributed hundreds of anatomical, botanical, and animal specimens to the museum collections. The Wistar and Horner Museum records date from 1822 to 1865, and consist of materials relating to museum collections, finances, funding, and curatorial activities; as well as Horner's human anatomy and dissecting class at the University of Pennsylvania.
