Walt Whitman Democratic Club records, 1975-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Formed in 1976 as the Gay Democratic Caucus, the Walt Whitman Democratic Club was a political organization of gay Democrats based in Philadelphia, PA. Founded and led by president Jeff Britton, the Club was active from 1976 to 1982, and according to Britton, was inspired by similar groups active in Washington, DC and on the West Coast. Its mission was "to research issues, to question candidates on legislation affecting the civil rights of gay people and to endorse local, state and federal candidates who support efforts to end discrimination against gay people." It met regularly at the Gay Community Center of Philadelphia (GCCP) as well as in the homes of Britton and other Club members. Membership dues were $5 per year. The collection is divided into three series: I. Business records; II. Subject files; and III. Printed materials.

Abstract:
The Pride of Philadelphia Election Committee (POPEC) is a political group founded in 1987 to identify and support LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) friendly candidates for public office. POPEC's "Pride of '99" coalition endorsed Republican candidate Sam Katz for Mayor of Philadelphia in 1999. This collection contains the administrative files of the Pride of Philadelphia Election Committee's "Pride of '99" coalition.

Abstract:
Ray (Raymond) Wall is a Republican public servant in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He has served as Bensalem Treasurer (formerly known as Tax Collector) continuously since 1985, and is still in office as of 2013. He is also very involved in the local Republican party, serving as Republican Committeeman for 20 years. The Ray Wall papers, 1986-2009, include Tax Collector Files relating to Wall's work as tax collector and treasurer and Political Papers relating to local elections and Wall's role in the Republican Party.

Abstract:
Joseph Fornance (1804-1852) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Norristown, Pennsylvania. Like the elder Joseph, his son Joseph Fornance (1841-1923) and grandson Joseph Knox Fornance (1882-1965) were lawyers involved with politics. The Fornance family papers, 1794-1989, is an extensive collection of correspondence, ledgers, diaries, photograph albums, scrapbooks, and documents covering several generations of one family. Family members were involved in numerous matters over more than one-and-a-half centuries, so among other subjects, there is rich documentation of military service during the Civil War and World War I, the election of Woodrow Wilson, and early efforts at historic preservation (the Fornance family home is considered the oldest in Norristown).

Abstract:
Thomas Winfield South (1847-1922) moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1872 to work for the Disston & Sons Saw Works as manager and land-agent for the Disston-owned properties in the Tacony section of the city. Heavily involved in real estate, transportation, and local politics and government, South became a prominent figure in Tacony and the city at large. Like his cousins Hamilton Disston (1844-1896) - the largest single investor in Florida's history - and Jacob Disston (1862-1938), South was involved with the development of central Florida. The Thomas W. South papers, 1861-1919, primarily consist of correspondence and legal papers that document South's various political and business engagements in Philadelphia. The collection also contains correspondence of the St. Petersburg Investment Company, 1905-1919 (bulk 1911-1912), an organization founded by Jacob Disston and fellow Philadelphian investors to finance development projects in and around Disston lands in Florida. The League of Women Voters (LWV) was established in 1919 to help educate women on the civic responsibilities of voting. The Abington-Cheltenham-Jenkintown branch, still active as of 2013, was established in 1951 and expanded in 1959. The League of Women Voters of Abington-Cheltenham-Jenkintown records, 1952-2009, include newsletters, minutes, programs, photographs, articles (clippings), government directories, correspondence, bylaws, membership directories, board meeting agendas and minutes.

Abstract:
The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania was established in 1920 as a successor organization to the Pennsylvania Woman Suffrage Association, with the purpose of providing "education to increase the effectiveness of women voters and to further better government." The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania records document the history of this organization from 1867 to 1980, but the bulk of the material dates from 1959 to 1977. The majority of the materials consists of minutes, newsletters, reports and memorabilia. There is a small amount of early material, particularly relating to the suffrage movement. Of particular interest may be the photographs of the 1915 Women's Liberty Bell Tour in support of the vote.

Delaware native Robert J. Voshell spent his career working for the Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles and served as a State Senator representing the Milford area from 1993-1998. The Robert J. Voshell collection of Delaware political ephemera scrapbooks contains 17 volumes and 2 albums of flyers, clippings, bumper stickers, newsletters, brochures, posters and other ephemeral material pertaining to local, state and federal elections, Delaware government and politics.
