Abstract:
Mary C. Carras (1928-2021) was a professor and scholar focusing on 20th century India and particularly Indira Gandhi. She authored several books and papers relating to Indira Gandhi, economic and foreign policy in India, biotechnology in India, and Indo-American relationships. The bulk of her collection consists of her research that she used for her writings and probably also for her classes; but there is also a small amount of correspondence with publishers, her student papers, and drafts and reproductions of her writings. Of particular interest may be her numerous interviews with politicians and government staff in India and the United States from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Abstract:
The Committee on Economic Problems was appointed in 1937 to cooperate with the Social Order Committee of the Arch Street Yearly Meeting. Clair Wilcox, a Quaker professor of Economics at Swarthmore College was the first Chair. The Committee was interested in a variety of related issues, including industrial relations, unemployment, and economic and social research.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Social Order Committee and its predecessors (1917-1969), 1917-1969 (inclusive)

Abstract:
A Social Order Committee was established by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in 1917 to "consider the part which the Religious Society of Friends should take in the present day application of efforts to promote the Kingdom of God on Earth, particularly as it relates to social, political, and industrial conditions." In 1927 it began to more formally cooperate with a similar committee of the Hicksite Yearly Meeting in much of its work; the two shared a Secretary, David S. Richie, after 1939. In 1948 the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings formed a joint Social Order Committee. It was absorbed into the Meeting for Social Concerns in 1969-70.

Henry George family papers, circa 1844-2000 (bulk 1880-1950)

Abstract:
Henry George (1839-1897) was a journalist and political economist best known for writing about and popularizing the idea of the "single tax." His work led to several reform movements in the Progressive Era and inspired the economic philosophy known today as "Georgism." Two of George's children, Henry George Jr. and Anna George de Mille, continued to be active in the single tax movement and promoting their father's legacy after his death in 1897. The Henry George family papers, circa 1844-2000 (bulk 1880-1950), consist of correspondence, published and unpublished works, and other materials from and about Henry George, Henry George Jr., and Agnes George de Mille. There are also photographs, prints, and illustrations of the George family and of Anna George de Mille's family.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Henry George (1839-1897) was a journalist and political economist best known for writing about and popularizing the idea of the "Single Tax." His work led to several reform movements in the Progressive Era and inspired the economic philosophy known today as "Georgism." George published his most popular work, Progress and Poverty, in 1879 while working as a journalist in San Francisco, California. Shortly after its publication, he moved to New York, NY, where he passed away in 1897. The Henry George Birthplace, Archive and Historical Research Center collection on Henry George and Progress and Poverty anniversary celebrations, 1905-2014 (bulk 1939-2014), consists of materials from or relating to various events celebrating the anniversaries of Henry George's birth and the publication of his best known work Progress and Poverty. Founded in 1932 by Oscar H. Geiger, the mission of the Henry George School of Social Science (HGSSS) is to promote economic and social justice based on the philosophy of Henry George and his masterpiece, Progress and Poverty (1879). Today, the HGSSS offers tuition free courses and seminars at its headquarters in New York City and at the School's dozens of satellite campuses around the world. The Henry George School of Social Science records, circa 1857-2002 (bulk 1932-1995), consist of materials produced by or relating to the administrators, employees, students, and satellite schools of the Henry George School of Social Science.
