Abstract:
Founded in Chicago in 1976, NOMOR's aim was "to call for a moratorium on the production of nuclear weapons as a unilateral American initiative...for a first step toward stopping and reversing the...international arms race." The founders and activists of NOMOR engaged in media campaigns, sponsored conferences, workshops, and benefits, and was involved with the "Symphony for Survival." News from NOMOR was published between 1978 and 1986. In spite of regional support, especially from the academic community, NOMOR was not able to make the transition to a nationally-recognized organization, possibly because its aims overlapped with those of other similar groups. NOMOR ceased operation in the summer of 1986

Abstract:
The IPW was begun in January, 1987 by individuals who had participated in the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament. IPW members organized marches across the United States and the Soviet Union in 1987 and 1988, with marches planned for future years. The purpose was to create a climate of trust between American and Soviet citizens in which arms control and reductions would become increasingly easier, and to focus attention on the costs of the U.S.-Soviet arms race. The IPW was headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional U.S. offices. The collection includes correspondence, administrative files, marcher applications, newspaper clippings, photographs, slides, and banners. Among the correspondents are: Allan Affeldt, Allen Smith, and Franklin Folsom.

Freeze Voter Records, 1983-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1983, supporters of the nuclear freeze founded Freeze Voter, an independent Political Action Committee (PAC). In response to the growing threat of nuclear war and the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the PAC's main goal was to "elect a President and Congress who will enact a nuclear weapons Freeze between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. The Committee [will] achieve this goal through the electoral process." The organization worked on the grass-roots level to identify supporters of a nuclear freeze and encourage them to vote for pro-freeze candidates. By 1984 over $3 million had been raised and Freeze Voter was the 13 largest non0union, non-corporate PAC in the U.S. By 1988, with the ending of the Cold War, the Freeze Voter board decide to close down the organization. Remaining assets were turned over to the Professionals' Coalition for Nuclear Arms Control (which operated until 1992).

Abstract:
GWEN (Ground Wave Emergency Network was a grass roots organization founded in the mid 1980s. Mobilized citizens protested the establishment of a GWEN network, a plan by the U.S. Air Force to build a system of radiotowers around the U.S. for the purpose of maintaining military communications in the event of nuclear war. The GWEN Project was a national organization, headquartered in Amherst, Massachusetts. The co-directors were Nancy Foster and Lois Barber. In 1994, the U.S. Congress refused further funding for GWEN, calling it wasteful and unnecessary.
