Abstract:: Friends' Freedmen's Association was an organization of Philadelphia Quakers founded in 1863 as Friends' Association of Philadelphia and Its Vicinity, for the Relief of Colored Freemen. Its purpose was to provide relief and education to formerly enslaved people during and after the Civil War. The name was changed circa 1873. From 1947-1955 the Association supported black students in schools and summer work camps. From 1955-1970 the income from investments was used to provide grants for scholarship to needy black students. From 1970 income and principal was distributed yearly primarily among Bryn Mawr, Earlham, Guilford, and Haverford Colleges. In January 1982 the Association was dissolved. The funds were distributed among the four colleges named above to be used as aid to black students as the J. Henry Scattergood Scholarship Fund. Abstract:: The primary activity of the Friends' Publishing Corporation is Friends Journal, a Quaker periodical. The latter was the successor to The Friend, the serial published by the Orthodox Quakers (1827-1955) and Friends Intelligencer, published by the Hicksite Quakers (1844-1955). It was established as a result of the merger of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings, and the first consolidated issue was dated July 2, 1955. Originally published weekly and then bi-weekly, it became a monthly periodical in 1988.

Chiefly correspondence and articles, including editorial correspondence concerning the periodical, The Pentecostal Friend, published by the Evangelical Friends Association, a Quaker Pentecostal organization located in Detroit, Michigan, and correspondence concerning the formation of the Elgon Yearly Meeting in East Africa.

Abstract:: Alice Hall Paxson (1868-1955) was a Quaker author and editor, of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Thomas Heston and Lydia H. (Cox) Hall of Chester County. The family moved to Swarthmore, Pa., about 1889, and Alice graduated from Swarthmore College in 1888. In 1897, she married Charles Paxson. The family had close ties to Swarthmore College, including many graduates. Lydia (Cox) Hall was founding editor and editor for forty years of the periodical Scattered Seeds, a position in which her daughters, Abby Hall Paxson and Abby Hall Roberts, succeeded her. About 1928, Alice Hall Paxson became sole editor. The collection contains chiefly editorial correspondence and other papers relating to Scattered Seeds, a magazine for Quaker children, from 1930-1936 when it was edited by Paxson. The collection also includes correspondence with American Unitarian Association, publishers of a similar periodical, The Beacon.

Abstract:: The Little Corporal, published monthly from July 1865 to June 1875, was one of the first nationally popular American children's magazines. The library holds issues of The Little Corporal dating from November 1870 to January 1874.

Abstract:: This collection, dating from 1866 to 2013, contains published works, personal papers, business records and ephemera assembled by Stuart "Buz" Teacher, who founded Running Press with his brother, Lawrence "Larry" Teacher in 1972. Published works that inspired Running Press in its early years are included herein, along with documents that pertain to the publishing house's subsequent growth and sale to the Perseus Books Group in 2002. Around 1983, the Teacher brothers began restoring a townhouse at 125 South 22nd Street in Philadelphia; the documentation of this process is also included in the collection.

Abstract:: Lee Eisenberg (born 1946), an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania, is an American writer and editor known for his time working for Esquire. Eisenberg was the senior editor and vice president of Esquire throughout the 1970s and 1980s and played a major role in the production of the 1984 50th Anniversary Edition of the magazine. This collection includes correspondence with almost half of the fifty famous people asked to write essays for the 50th anniversary issue as well as assorted notes, clippings, and article manuscripts, most of which relate to their contributions.
