Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women records, 1916-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women (PCAW) was founded in 1916 by sixteen women advertising executives. The Club participated in charitable efforts, offered advertising courses, published a newsletter (Ad-Land News), and hosted social events throughout its history. These efforts garnered national recognition for PCAW as a leading advertising organization. It also won them recognition locally as an organization committed to helping the community through scholarships and charitable giving. This collection contains the records produced by PCAW from 1916 to 1984, including material related to their advertising courses, events, history, charity involvement, and meetings. The collection has several strengths, the most notable of which is its comprehensive coverage of organizational activities from 1930 to 1977. Abstract:
The Dr. Daniel and Eleanor Albert collection of ophthalmology material (1596-2000, undated) presents the historical transformations of eye care and ocular medicine, with a particular emphasis on the field in the nineteenth century. While the majority of materials in this collection relate to ophthalmology, some pertain more broadly to medicine or to American history. In addition to the historical medical documents, this collection includes dozens of pairs of antique spectacles and over one hundred ophthalmoscopes.

The records fall into three major categories, and a fourth category containing a small amount of historical material: (1) Ladies' Home Journal, circa 1887-1946: correspondence (principally with editor William V. Alexander), financial records, and a small amount of historical material related to the publication; (2) Division of Commercial Research, Advertising Department, circa 1911-1960: research reports, speeches, and statistical studies directed by Charles Coolidge Parlin, his associates and successors, such as Henry Sherwood Youker; (3) Serials, circa 1913-1957: in-house publications of the Curtis Company; and (4) Historical material, scrapbooks, and memorabilia.

Abstract:
Stewart Culin (13 July 1858-8 April 1929) was an American anthropologist and ethnographer primarily interested in games, fashion, and the decorative and commercial arts. Culin assembled a collection of advertisements related to businesses and products largely located and sold in Philadelphia between May 1884 and February 1886. The collection features two scrapbooks and a series of 93 loose advertisements organized by topic.

Abstract:
This collection contains over 750 buttons, pins, stamps, and coins that date from 1820 to 1978. The buttons reflect political, cultural and social movements during this time span, and document businesses; organizations including social groups, service groups, and unions; local and national campaigns for a variety of elected officials from alderman to president; event memorabilia; famous individuals; and military groups. While the bulk of the items are from the United States, researchers will find items from across the globe.

William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera, 1736-2006, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
The William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera contains prints that address the public perception of physicians and the practice of medicine across three centuries (1736-2006, with undated materials). A large number of cartoons from nineteenth century French satirical newspapers reveal that medical practices and symbols were used to visually express political sentiments. In this collection, medicine also emerges as a theme in imagerie populaire, inexpensive block prints mass-produced during the same period. Other aspects and eras of medicine are represented in the collection's portraits, advertisements, devotional images and artwork.

Abstract:
Wolrd's fairs and expositions have been held internationally from 1851 and continue into the present. This collection comprises written materials, memorabilia, and, to a more limited extent, other materials such as photographs and musical recordings from or related to world's fairs and expositions that took place between 1851 and 1992. Most expositions recognized by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) are represented, as well as many that are not officially recognized by the BIE. Some non-world's fair events are also represented to a limited extent. While events from around the world are featured in the collection, it primarily centers on expositions that occurred in the United States.
