American Women's Hospitals Service photographs, 1917-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The American Women's Hospitals (AWH) developed from the War Service Committee of the Medical Women's National Association (later called the American Medical Women's Association) in 1917, to provide, register and finance American women physicians for war work; to offer medical and emergency relief to refugees; and, later, to provide international public health service. In 1959, AWH became an independent agency and remained such until 1982 when it re-merged with the American Medical Women's Association. The collection houses photographs created by the American Women's Hospitals Service (AWHS) from 1917 to 1982 to document and promote the organization's efforts to provide health care to under-serviced populations in the United States and abroad. The photographs were frequently used in fundraising and publicity campaigns. Zelma Corning Brandt papers, 1906-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Zelma Corning Brandt (1891-1990) was a social crusader active throughout the twentieth century. Her chief interests included the independence and development of colonial countries, American Indian affairs, nuclear disarmament, women's issues, and geriatric concerns. The collection consists of correspondence, travel notes, diaries and writings, and publications and reports, especially from 1960-1989. Brandt's longevity and attention to detail provide a complete view of various world and domestic issues and events through this period. Zelma Brandt attended Bryn Mawr College from 1909 to 1911.

Melanie Atherton Updegraff Collection, 1910s-1980s (bulk) 1685-2020 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Melanie Atherton Updegraff (1886-1973) was a 1908 graduate of Bryn Mawr who went on to do missionary work for the Presbyterian Mission Board alongside her husband, Reverend David Benjamin Updegraff. The two were primarily stationed in Kolhapur and later Nipani, in West India. The collection includes correspondence between Updegraff and her sisters, children, and sister-in-law, among other family members, photographs of the Atherton and Updegraff families, an autograph collection, and brochures, pamphlets, and official documentation pertaining to Updegraff's missionary work. Updegraff's four sisters and three daughters all went to Bryn Mawr, and we hear about entrance exams, musical productions, and other campus activities in their letters.

Jessie May Scott papers, 1930-2000 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Jessie May Scott was a prominent federal nursing leader, serving as Director of the Division of Nursing and Assistant Surgeon General. She administrated the Nurse Training Acts of 1964 and directed federal programs for nursing that improved the quality of education and practice. This collection of papers spans Scott’s professional career, documenting her experience with the Division of Nursing, Public Health Service from 1955-1979.

Margaret Jenkins journals, 1875-1912 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection is comprised of three volumes of the travel journals of Margaret Jenkins. The first volume describes Jenkins's voyage from New York to San Francisco, and her voyage home from San Francisco to New York via Liverpool. The remaining two volumes describe Margaret Jenkins's trip to the Himalayan Mountains in 1911 and 1912, to visit her cousin, who was a missionary there.

Charles R. Pancoast lantern slides, late 19th century-early 20th century

Abstract:: Charles R. Pancoast (1854-1931) was a photographer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania active from the 1870s to 1922. In his shop, Pancoast developed his own photographs as well as those of other photographers. He enjoyed traveling and captured many images from foreign locations. Charles R. Pancoast lantern slides, late 19th century-early 20th century, consist of over twelve hundred slides taken by Pancoast in Philadelphia and during his travels throughout the North America, Asia, the Middle East, and South America.

Nicholas L. Childs family papers, 1818-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Childs and Moon families were long-time residents of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Nicholas Lewarne Childs (1940-2009) taught history and Asian studies in private secondary schools in New Jersey, Iran, and Singapore. The bulk of the Childs family papers, 1818-1991, relate to Nicholas L. Childs and date from about 1965 to 1991, but there are also older materials from Louis M. Childs II, Nicholas L. Moon, Jacob Childs, Lizzy Orchard, and other Childs and Moon family members. The collection is comprised of correspondence, travel journals, travel ephemera, lecture notes and slides, photographs, genealogical research, legal documents, vital records, and other miscellaneous papers.

India photo album, 1860-1900 (inclusive)

Extent:: 0.33 linear feet (1 volume)
Abstract:: This bound album contains 69 black and white photographs of various scenes in India from the later half of the 19th century. It is unknown who compiled this album and it lacks any descriptive text, but the bulk of the images are of historic structures, such as tombs, mosques, temples, palaces, forts and ruins, in the vicinity of Agra, Calcutta, Delhi, Lucknow, and Uttar Pradesh. Some of the photographs have been identified as the works of Samuel Bourse (1834-1912) or John P. Nichols (circa 1830-1905).
