Shigezo and Sonoko Iwata papers, 1942-1991

Abstract:: Shigezo Iwata was born in Japan and immigrated to the United States in 1924. Sonoko U. Iwata was born in Los Angeles. The couple made their home in Thermal, California where they farmed and Shigezo was secretary of the Thermal Farmers' Cooperative Association. Separated in the initial part of World War II when Shigezo was arrested and detained by the FBI at the Lordsburg Internment Camp (New Mexico), the Iwatas were reunited in 1943 at the Colorado River Relocation Center near Poston, Arizona. The collection contains letters between the Iwatas and their friends detailing life in the relocation center and the internment camp. There are also personal documents and biographical materials.

Kokka Magazine collection, c. 1904-1914 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection is comprised of a series of oversized, handmade books on the history of Japanese art. In addition to text and notations, the books contain both color and black-and-white full-page illustrations by numerous Japanese artists. The books seem to run in a number of separate series within the collection, and are written entirely in Japanese.

Alan Kaufman papers, circa 19th century, 1952-2007 (inclusive) 1952-2007 (bulk)

Abstract:: The papers of Alan Kaufman--an American Jewish author, editor, performer, artist, and impresario--include drafts of his memoir Jew Boy, his novel Matches, editorial material related to volumes in his Outlaw Bible series, and the magazine Davka: Jewish Cultural Revolution. There are numerous notebooks with notes, observations, lists, and drafts of poetry and writing, as well as original artwork. The collection also includes publishing and personal correspondence, and material documenting Kaufman's involvement in the San Francisco Spoken Word poetry movement and other creative activities.

Japanese Army aviator photograph album, circa 1936

Abstract:: This album contains photographs taken by an aviator of the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War, during deployment in Manchuria and northeastern China. The photos are a mixture of posed, formal shots and candid photos of soldiers in military action and in camp within the steppes of Manchura, including local peoples with horses, yurts, and Bactrian camels. There are also shots of friends and family on the home front; the names of photographic studios suggest that the aviator came from somewhere near Ueno.

Japanese aviator photograph album, 1931-1944 (inclusive)

Abstract:: During the early 20th century, the Imperial Japanese Navy was responsible for training pilots. During World War II, wartime attrition contributed to reductions in selectiveness for pilot training, as well as the length of the training sessions. This scrapbook contains photographs collected by a Japanese fighter pilot during World War II. It catalogs his graduation as a "Hikou-renshuusei" (enlistee/NCO pilot trainee) and his subsequent deployment as a fighter pilot.

Japanese machine gunner's photograph album, circa 1937

Abstract:: In 1937 Japan invaded the Republic of China, setting in motion the Second Sino-Japanese War, the largest Asian war in the 20th century and the beginning of the larger Pacific War (the Asian theater of World War II). This album contains photographs taken by a heavy machine gunner in the Japanese Imperial Army during the Second Sino-Japanese war. The photographs include posed group shots from army training, less formal group shots taken in the field, and is especially notable for its action shots from the battlefield, as well as candid photographs of military travel and camp life.

Japanese photograph album relating to the late Taisho/early Showa era, 1919-1941 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This album documents the life of a Japanese family from the middle of the Taisho era (circa 1919) to the early-to-middle Showa era (circa 1941), during which Japan emerged as a militaristic imperial power in Southeast Asia. Though there is little direct biographical information, it appears that the family was upper class, and the patriarch was a high-placed figure in the Ishakawa Civil Engineers. Many of the photographs appear to come from soldiers stationed abroad—judging by their winter gear and the time period, probably Manchuria. The photographs are a mix of portraits, informal small group shots, and large-scale organizational photographs documenting school classes, military units, civilian leagues and professional associations.

Japanese naval officer photograph album relating to the "Second Shanghai Incident", 1932-1939 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In 1937 Japan invaded the Republic of China, setting in motion the Second Sino-Japanese War, the largest Asian war in the 20th century and the beginning of the larger Pacific War (the Asian theater of World War II). This album contains photographs taken by a warrant officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Many of photographs depict the officer at various stages in his career. There are also shots of friends and family, with men in military uniform and women in formal attire. Dating and signage suggests the action shots pertain to the Battle of Shanghai in 1937.
