Abstract:: The office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created during the organization of the College in 1787. The Secretary is the appointed officer of record. The position's original duties were to record the minutes and transactions of the College and preserve its documents and correspondence. As of 2018, the Office of the Secretary is still active; however, these records are now documented through the Executive Office. The Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary span the years 1875 to 1988; however, there are gaps in represented years. This collection consists mainly of memos, correspondence, flyers related to lectures and other special events held at and sponsored by the College.

List of Alvarenga Prize entries, 1920-1933 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This volume dates from 1920 through 1933, and contains lists of entries for the annual Alvarenga Prize essay, as well as the winner. Each entry includes the title of the essay, its "motto," the author's name, and the status - either destroyed, returned, or "won prize." The Alvarenga Prize was establised in 1887 or 1888, when Associate Fellow Da Costa Alvarenga of lisbon, Portugal, left the College approximately $4000.00 to fund an annual prize in his name. The essay could be on any subject in the field of medicine. Previously catalogued as 10a 375.

Records of the Communication and Development Departments, 1978-1999 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Office of Advancement of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia was formed in 2015 by the merging of two departments: the Communications Department and the Development Department, which were created in 1988 and 1987, respectively. The functions of the Office of Advancement include all aspects of fundraising; public relations for the entire College; and administration of the Fellowship and Friends of the Mütter, a membership program open to the public which supports the Mütter Museum. The Records of the Offices of Communication and Development date from 1977 to 1999 and consist of reports, minutes, and committee files; fellowship information, including membership packets; grants, including the capital campaign the New Century Fund; correspondence; press releases and newsclippings; and material regarding the Bicentennial Symposium in 1987.

Records of Continuing Medical Education Programs, 1973-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:: During the 1970s, there was an emphasis on continuing medical education (CME) for practicing licensed medical doctors. Lifetime licenses to practice medicine were being replaced by limited time licenses that required renewal. In order to renew their state issued medical licenses, doctors were required to obtain continuing education credits. Beginning in 1974, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia offered symposiums, distance education programs, courses in Philadelphia, and additional programs. These programs include PREP, PREP CV, and the Emergency Medicine program. The College's CME programs ended in 1980 and 1981. The Records of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia Continuing Education Programs date from 1973 to 1981 and consist of correspondence and records pertaining to continuing education programs, including the Basic Science Section, FOCUS, College Night, PREP, PREP CV, CME, Emergency Medicine, and other programs. Abstract:: This collection contains a small amount of Robert Campbell's correspondence, 1978-1980, from his tenure as President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Robert E. Campbell was born in 1931. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1957 and specialized in diagnostic radiology. In 1975, Campbell was elected a Fellow of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and served as its President from 2006 to 2008.

Abstract:: The College of Physicians was founded in 1787 as a private medical society devoted to the advancement of medical education, research, and guidance of the medical profession itself. In order to help fulfill these goals, the College's Fellowship have garnered impressive resources including a biomedical library in 1788, a medical museum in 1858, an institute for the history of medicine in 1976, and museum education programs in 2006. These resources are housed in a building constructed in 1909 at 19 South Twenty-Second Street. With its rich resources, adjoining medicinal herb garden, and ample meeting space, the College serves as a repository for the history of Philadelphia medicine and as an arena for the discussion of contemporary health care issues. Records of the Committee on the Joseph N. Pew Memorial Loan Fund, 1961-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In December 1961, the College received a $25,000 gift from the Pew Memorial Trust. The gift was intended to help the College reach financial stability and to start a drive benefitting interns and residents in area hospitals. In response, the Committee on Internship and Residency was established in 1962. The Internship and Residency Committee sent out questionnaires to Philadelphia-area hospital administrators, residents, and interns. Data collected from residents and interns included marital status, professional goals, whether they had insurance, and whether they had loans from medical school. The purpose of the questionnaires was to establish whether the Philadelphia area had need of a loan fund (for residents and interns) sponsored by the College. Forty out of the forty-five hospitals contacted responded, and the majority recognized the need for such a program. Records of the Committee on the Centennial Celebration, 1886-1887; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Committee on the Centennial Celebration was established 1 October 1884 and held its first meeting on 3 January 1885. The Committee's task was to "consider and report upon an appropriate plan to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the College in 1887." It held sixteen meetings in total, ande made the following recommendations: 1) To form a collection of portraits of past Fellows to be exhibited during the celebration; 2) That the celebration should be held January 3 and 4, 1887, including an address by the President, a reception, a special meeting for conferring diplomas on Associate Fellows, and a dinner at the Union League; and 3) Invitations should be sent to all Fellows of the College as well as presidents of other medical societies, including the Medical Society of Pennsylvania and the American Medical Association. Abstract:: The Committee on the Sesquicentennial Celebration held its first meeting on January 27, 1937. The Committee were tasked with planning the 150th anniversary celebration of the College, including choosing dates, finding speakers, and hiring caterers for the banquet. The Records of the Committee on the Sesquicentennial Celebration date from 1937, and document the activities of the Committee. Included in the collection are meeting minutes, correspondence amongst committee members, and reports; correspondence with potential speakers; a list of people to receive invitations, and RSVPs, both accepting and regretful.
