Abstract:
This collection traces several generations of the Quaker Taylor family, but centers on Francis R. Taylor (1884-1947) and George Washington Taylor (1803-1891). The former was an attorney and collector of information about his own and related families, as well as local historical information. The latter, who ran a free produce store in Philadelphia in the period before the American Civil War, was connected through his interests in free labor to many correspondents.

John M. Grisom was a physician who lived and practiced in Moorestown, Burlington, New Jersey. His diary focuses on his attendance at "Friendly Study Group" meetings, a group, according to Griscom, that gathers for "the study of the influences and causes leading to the separation of 1827." Entries describe discussions had at these meetings.

Abstract:
John Hunt, a Quaker minister from Chester, New Jersey, was born in 1740, the son of Robert and Abigail (Wood) Hunt. He kept a journal for more than 40 years, recording Quaker concerns and daily events. This collections consists primarily of the manuscript journal, 1770-1800; fragments of 1805, 1806 & 1808; and 1814-1824. There if also an account book, some correspondence received, and other miscellaneous materials.

Abstract:
This collection centers on the correspodence and family history of the Garrigues family and the Price family, to whom the former were linked with the marriage of Edward Garrigues and Margaret Price. The correspondence, received by Edward Garrigues, is from many prominent Quaker ministers, including Isaac Hicks as he travelled with his cousin, Elias Hicks. Other correspondents include Rebecca Jones, Sarah Scattergood, Stephen Grellet, Charity Cook, Deborah Darby, and Martha Routh. The letters relate the travels of these ministers to meetings in both Europe and the United States, and their thoughts on spirituality.

The collection contains correspondence, journals and other writings, business and legal papers, and miscellaneous items of the Ferris family of Wilmington, Delaware, a prominent Quaker family. Of particular note are the correspondence and writings of Benjamin Ferris concerning the Separation in the Society of Friends, as well as the journals and diaries of Anna M. Ferris, David Ferris, Matilda Ferris, Benjamin Ferris, and Henry Ferris. Correspondents include William Lloyd Garrison, William Gibbons, Isaac T. Hopper, Joseph Bringhurst, Mary Gibbons, William Poole, Mary Biddle, Joseph Rakestraw, Halliday Jackson, and John Jackson. This collection includes the correspondence of Hannah Hurnard and her family, written between Essex, England, and Wilmington, Delaware. The letters document the family's emigration to America, their struggles adapting to life there, and finally their return to England. Letters between Hannah and her sister, Elizabeth Clark, share family and local news. Letters from Mary Thresher relate the activities of Quaker ministers, including Stephen Grellet, Jesse Kersey, and Nathan Hunt. The letters reflect opinions on contemporary events in English politics. Letters from American friends relate the growing division in the Society sparked by the teachings of Elias Hicks. Deborah Bringhurst, a Wilmington Hicksite, gives a detailed account of events surrounding the Separation. Robert Hurnard condemns her position. Letters from George Fennell to his family in England, relate details of his emigration to North Carolina, and his observations on the American south.

Elias Hicks (1748-1830) was an eminent Quaker minister from Jericho, Long Island, N.Y. In the 1820s, a religious controversy within the Society of Friends which focused on Hicks' ministry led to the Hicksite-Orthodox Separation of 1827-1828. The collection includes correspondence written and received by Elias Hicks, sermons, surveyor's drawings, family correspondence, and other papers. Also includes the original 1748-1822 manuscript journal of Elias Hicks (in three parts) and the 1828 Ohio travel journal.
