Abstract:
The Second Lancers, established in 1809 by William Linnaeus Gardner (1770-1835), was a cavalry regiment in the British Indian Army. It is probable that the creator of this album was a British or Indian officer who served with the Second Lancers between 1909 and 1913. For the most part, military life is not documented--instead the volume consists of formal portraits of British and Indian soldiers; candid photographs of soldiers; portraits of horses; and photographs of a trip to England, equine sports in India (including racing and polo), and a trip to Delhi for the Delhi Durbar held in December 1911 to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary as Emperor and Empress of India.

Ahmednagar, a city and fort in India, was the site of one of Great Britain's prisoner of war camps during World War I. This camp held both prisoners of war and German and Austrian civilians from 1914 and 1918. This photograph album, belonging to H. Ehlers, contains 54 photographs that document life at Ahmednagar. The landscape surrounding the camp; the buildings; the inhabitants (both military and civilian prisoners); and the prisoners' pastimes, espeically sports and cultural activities are particularly well represented.

This photograph album was kept by a British engineer working on a hydroelectric project that included building dams at Warsak and Kurram Garhi, North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. During a five-month period from 1951 to 1952 the engineer recorded work sites, engineers, landscapes, and street scenes. There are also images from his stops in Cyprus and Rome on his return trip to London.

Abstract:
This photograph album consists of thirty-one original black and white photographs documenting Sudanese culture and the changes the British brought to the country during the period of Anglo-Egyptian occupation. Included are views of Halfa, Kassala, Sennar, Khartoum (including government buildings, Gordon College, Kitchener Memorial Medical School, the Grand Hotel Khartoum, and Khartoum Palace), Omdurman, Suakin, and Port Sudan, all of which are situated along the Sudan government railways. There are also several images documenting the Gezira scheme, the Sennar irrigation dam, and indigenous peoples harvesting wheat and cotton.

George W. Norris scrapbooks and photograph albums, 1875-1964 (inclusive)

Abstract:
George William Norris (1875-1965) was a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and chief of Medical Service at the Pennsylvania Hospital. After a successful career and a period of overseas service with the Medical Corps during the first World War, Norris retired to a country house in northeast Pennsylvania. There, Norris was able to dedicate himself to his greatest interests: photography and family history. This collection contains four scrapbooks (1875-1964) compiled by Norris which feature many photographic portraits of Norris family members and landscapes of the Pennsylvania countryside. The scrapbooks also contain background information about Norris' family and one scrapbook is filled with some of George Norris' correspondence, certificates of membership to philanthropic and academic societies, and other papers. This collection also includes a short account of a 1963 Christmas trip to Guatemala.

Henry Vaux photograph albums of India, 1911-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Major Henry George Vaux (1883-1957) was a military secretary in the British Army, posted in India. He served as Aide de Camp to Lord Carmichael who served as Governor of Victoria from 1908 to 1911, Governor of Madras from 1911 to 1912, and Governor of Bengal from 1912 to 1914. Major Vaux also served under Lord Ronaldshay, Lord Lytton and Lord Sykes. He was named Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire in 1921 by King George the V. Major Vaux ended his career as a Lieutenant Colonel. The five volumes of photographs capture the luxurious style and activities present in the lives of the highest ranking British military posted to India, and their families, in the early part of the 20th century. The subject of many photographs are the leisure activities enjoyed by this group – horse races, polo, hunting, tennis – as well as ceremonial events such as visits of kings, queens and dignitaries of all kind. This collection, dating from 1866 to 2013, contains published works, personal papers, business records and ephemera assembled by Stuart "Buz" Teacher, who founded Running Press with his brother, Lawrence "Larry" Teacher in 1972. Published works that inspired Running Press in its early years are included herein, along with documents that pertain to the publishing house's subsequent growth and sale to the Perseus Books Group in 2002. Around 1983, the Teacher brothers began restoring a townhouse at 125 South 22nd Street in Philadelphia; the documentation of this process is also included in the collection.

This collection documents the career of Carol Joyce (born 1946), a bookbinder, conservator, designer, and artist, specializing in book and paper restoration, limited edition books, conservation enclosures, and the rebinding of damaged books. She owned and operated Academy Books and Bindery, in Stockton, New Jersey, from 1983 to 2008. The collection contains many examples of limited-edition books that she produced or collected, as well as visual and written documentation for some of her projects.

Richard Louis Gimbel (1898-1970) was vice president of Gimbel Brothers, an officer in the United States Air Force, and a book collector. The volume contains images of his extended family in Atlantic City; his classmates and friends at the School of Practice of the School of Pedagogy; events in Philadelphia such as the New Years Day parade, fires in the city, and landmark buildings; and a baseball game that probably took place in Philmont, Pennsylvania.

Abstract:
This photograph album was probably created by a British subject traveling (or possibly living) in Karachi, in what is now Pakistan. For the most part, these beautiful photographs which were carefully mounted and captioned appear to be travel photographs, although the time frame of the album, dating from 1930 to 1935, indicates the photographer and compiler was in the country for longer than a mere visit. The album appears to cover areas of what is now Pakistan and northern India, with a focus on Karachi, Port Said, Sandspit, New Delhi, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Seringapatam, and Sivasamudram. Photographs focus largely on urban and scenic vistas, but the photographer also documents the people of India.

This collection consists of three scrapbooks compiled by Arthur Cartwright, a British soldier who served in India under the 5th West Kents during World War I. It is unclear if Cartwright saw combat while serving in India, as many Territorial battalions spent the war on garrison duty and relieved the Regular battalions for front-line service. Indeed, his photographs mainly depict aspects of his life in a military camp and attest to the sightseeing Cartwright embarked upon throughout northern India and especially in Agra. This collection is composed of 45 photographs in a leather bound and engraved album which includes substantial interior design elements, specifically 16 color plates by R. Caton Woodville. The album itself is entitled "Army & Navy Album" and was published in Germany. The subjects of the photographs are all individuals, in formal, studio settings. A majority are in military dress, some in every day outfits. There does not appear to be continuity in the photos and little duplication in the subjects. It's likely the photos were taken in the last several decades of the 1800s, around the time of the printing of the album itself, though no dates are recorded in the album.

This collection contains some papers of the esteemed American dentist Newell Sill Jenkins (1840-1919) who practiced for most of his career in Dresden, Germany and popularized the use of porcelain tooth enamel. A small booklet with notes on Jenkins' experiments with dental cement is included in the collection, along with a large album presented to him on his seventieth birthday by a cohort of American dentists. There are also a few miscellaneous photographs and pages of notes in this collection, as well as a menu from a dinner held in Jenkins' honor.

Abstract:
This bound album contains 69 black and white photographs of various scenes in India from the later half of the 19th century. It is unknown who compiled this album, but the album was probably created by a British person traveling through India. The bulk of the images are of historic structures, such as tombs, mosques, temples, palaces, forts and ruins, in the vicinity of Agra, Calcutta, Delhi, Lucknow, and Uttar Pradesh. None of the images have any descriptive text. Some of the photographs have been identified as the works of Samuel Bourse (1834-1912) or John P. Nichols (circa 1830-1905). The first page contains a print of the arms of the colleges, halls, etc. of Oxford produced by Thomas Shrimpton & Son.

Arab photographer Chalil Raad, also known as Khalil Ra'd, photographed the dedication of the Augusta Victoria complex located on the northern side of Mount of Olives in East Jerusalem in 1910. This photograph album contains interior and exterior black and white photographs of the Augusta Victoria Church and Hopsice, dignitaries, including Prince Eitel Friedrich and Duchess Sofia Charlotte of Prussia, who attended the dedication ceremony.
