David Fox Nelson scrapbooks, 1863-1879, 1883, 1890-1895 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection consists of five scrapbooks assembled between 1869 and 1890 by David Fox Nelson, an African American man who escaped from slavery in North Carolina as a child and eventually arrived in New York, where he worked for the post office for several decades. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings covering a wide range of topics, especially subjects of particular significance to African Americans in the Reconstruction era. One scrapbook contains correspondence from Nelson's acquaintances of high political or social standing. Another scrapbook was assembled by Nelson for his future wife, Cassie E. Day.

Consists of three handwritten letters from Williard Hall, U.S. Representative (R-Delaware), lawyer, and judge from Delaware. The earliest of the three letters is a letter of recommendation for a resident of Delaware wishing for a clerkship in the Navy department. The second is a letter to Delaware Governor Charles Thomas on whether or not one could serve as a Governor and Speaker of the Senate at the same time. The third letter is addressed to Abraham Staats, Auditor of Accounts for the State of Delaware, in response to Staats' question about whether or not the schools in New Castle County were receiving the currect amounts of funds.

A letter from Jones to his wife descrbed his experience as a farmer and merchant during the civil war and his interpretation of the reaction of the citizens of Baltimore to the war.

Robert Marshall Hannum vs. The Wilmington City Railroad company papers, 1901 february 21-october 2 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Eleven handwritten accident reports, eye witness accounts, and court declaration make up this small collection documenting an accident involving a horse-drawn wagon, driven by Robert Marshall Hannum, and Wilmington City Railroad Co. trolley car no. 15, on February 22, 1901 . Also included is the subsequent lawsuit brought by Mr. Hannum. Documentation includes accident reports completed by the conductor of the car, Adolph Edwards, and by the car’s motorman, William Anseaume, as well as the reports from five individuals who witnessed the accident. . An accident report for a separate and unrelated incident, which occurred on February 21, 1901, is also included in the collection. This accident involved a horse and wagon owned by a Miss Price, but driven by an unidentified individual, and Wilmington Railroad Co. car no. 25. This accident report was completed by motorman T. L. Daniels.

These twelve letters were written by Delawarean Fagan H. Simonton to his mother, Mrs. W. A. (Hettie) Simonton, who resided in Wilmington, Delaware, during his service in the U.S. Army during the first World War. The letters, which date from June 1918 to May 1919, document the experiences of training and embarkment from Camp Meade to France. With references to trenches, gas "the flu," and the armistice, the letters Simonton's experiences in Europe during America's late entrance to the Great War and the period of occupation following the cessation of hostilities.

Thirteen letters from five Confederate soldiers imprisoned at Fort Delaware. The names of the soldiers are: Sam Spengler, Abraham Shillingburg, Joseph G. [Sager], Edward [Sheets], and Albert Snead. All were soldiers from the 10th Virginia Infantry, the 7th Virginia Cavalry, or the 23rd Virginia Infantry. Letters are written to Mrs. Nannie Sellman, or Mr. H. F. Hebb. Also included is one letter from a mother of one of the prisoners and one letter from a father of a prisoner.

This collection contains presentation memorabilia related to Henry Clay, American Statesman, given to Henry Clay Reed, University of Delaware professor and historian, by Henry Clay Conrad, historian and State Archivist of Delaware. Items include two copies of engravings of Henry Clay, a silk ribbon commemorating Clay, and a presentation letter (1929) from Conrad to Reed. Reed had worked for Conrad at the Delaware State Archives. In the letter, Henry Clay Conrad explains that he is sending two prints of Henry Clay engravings to Reed because both men are his namesakes; Reed later added the ribbon to the engravings and had all three pieces mounted for display.

Abstract:
This collection primarily consists of 187 photographs that document Karl Oscar Hugg’s activities as a World War I pilot for Germany. Before and after the war he studied to be an opera singer, and two concert programs for events he sang at are included. In 1923, Hugg immigrated to the United States, where he worked as a tool and die maker. In 1942 he was faced with possible denaturalization over some pro-German statements he made. The collection includes news clippings from his denaturalization trial in 1942 to 1943, as well as other biographical information.

Conrad Linke was a German-American illustrator and painter from Philadelphia. This collection documents the political and charitable activities of him and his wife, Marian Linke, during the years 1917 to 1991. Prior to World War II they were involved in the movement to maintain American neutrality. After World War II they were involved in war relief efforts for Germany through several organizations they were members of or supported. Included are personal writings, notes and drafts, correspondence, speeches, pamphlets, leaflets, clippings, business reports and ephemera from many of those organizations.

This collection documents the activities of Karl T. Marx and it spans the years 1930 to 1984 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1939 to 1983. He was a German immigrant who was employed in the textile industry and was also a prolific writer in the German and English languages on a variety of subjects. Some of his writings deal with technical issues related to the textile industry. Other writings include aphorisms, prose and articles related to his interest in German-American history. During World War II, he collected political cartoons related to the war from various newspapers that are arranged in two scrapbooks. The collection also includes correspondence, clippings, photographs, ephemera, and films.
