Abstract:
In 1731, Benjamin Franklin and a group of intellectual Philadelphians established the Library Company of Philadelphia, a subscription library supported by its shareholders. The Library Company of Philadelphia is now an independent research library specializing in American society and culture from the 17th to 19th centuries. The mission of the Library Company of Philadelphia includes preserving, interpreting, making available, and augmenting the valuable materials within its care. In order to achieve this mission, the Library Company of Philadelphia curates exhibits, hosts symposia and conferences, and publishes works regarding the Library Company and its collections. This collection consists of printed material created by the Library Company of Philadelphia. Samuel X Radbill papers, 1800-1987 (bulk) 1800-1987 1635-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Samuel X Radbill (1901-1987) began his medical career as a general practitioner in 1926 and became a pediatrician in 1938, when he was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Radbill was perhaps better known as a medical historian, and collector of bookplates and old and rare medical texts than as a pediatrician. He believed that the study of medicine’s past was useful to its practice, and he encouraged many of his professional colleagues to examine the history of their specialties. The Samuel X Radbill papers evidences Radbill’s deep and unrelenting interest in the history of medicine, particularly the history of pediatrics and dermatology, folklore, ancient medicine, medical art and medical bookplates. Sydney Goodsir Smith papers, 1954-1960 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Sydney Goodsir Smith Papers date primarily from the late 1950s and early 1960s, an especially nationalist phase in Smith’s literary career. The collection contains several drafts and advance proofs of Smith’s play The Wallace and manuscripts of his long dramatic poems, Gowdsmith in Reekie and The Vision of the Prodigal Son. Also present are seventeen pieces of correspondence and the manuscripts of about twenty prose pieces, including essays, reviews, and scripts from radio talks.

Abstract:
The papers of American art historian Mary Bartlett Cowdrey comprise nine linear feet of notes; correspondence; manuscripts of published and unpublished books and articles; engravings and lithographs from published sources; photographs of paintings and engravings; postcards; clippings from books, exhibition catalogs, magazines, and newspapers, for approximately 1,600 American artists active during the eighteenth through early twentieth centuries. The collection is arranged in five series that roughly correspond to Cowdrey's publishing and research projects.

The Frank W. Tober collection on literary forgery comprises letters, books, pamphlets, journals and journal articles, newspaper clippings, auction and exhibition catalogs, and other ephemera related to literary forgery. While Tober collected specimens of a variety of manuscript and printed forgeries, he was most interested in the literary forgeries of Thomas J. Wise and H. Buxton Forman.

Abstract:
The William A. Oliver, Jr. collection related to The Mystery of Edwin Drood comprises 10.5 linear feet of material plus oversize items dating from 1844 to 2005 and includes extensive bibliographic information relating to the works of Charles Dickens and specifically to the author's final novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1870), which was unfinished at the time of his death. The collection, which illuminates Oliver's activities as a collector and bibliographer, includes publications that printed original versions of the storyline, as well as various derivative works based on the novel; extensive bibliographies of editions of Dickens's works and scholarly work on Dickensiana, with a focus on Edwin Drood; and travel information and souvenirs from Dickens-related landmarks and events.

Abstract:
The Bruce Garland collection of Thomas Wise material comprises approximately 1.6 linear feet of material pertaining to English bibliographer, book collector, and forger Thomas J. Wise (1859-1937). Much of the collection's material was compiled by English bibliographer and book collector John Carter (1905-1975), who co-authored with Graham Pollard (1903-1976) An Enquiry into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets (1934), which effectively outed Wise as a forger. The collection contains correspondence, including original correspondence of Wise's, manuscripts, page proofs, galley proofs, auction catalogs, clippings, scrapbooks, periodicals and articles, and ephemera.

Abstract:
Moroccan author and artist Mohammed Mrabet (born 1940) worked closely with American expatriate writer and musician Paul Bowles (1910-1999). This collection contains letters from several of Mrabet's friends and acquaintances, most notably from American writers and editors Irving Stettner (1922-2004) and Michael Wolfe (born 1945). Also included are reviews of Mrabet's works and photocopied dust jackets from his books.

Abstract:
John Furnival (1933-2020) was a British visual artist whose work is associated with the Concrete Poetry, Mail Art, and Fluxus movements, as well as with the American Beats. In 1964, Furnival, along with Dom Sylvester Houédard, founded Openings Press, a small Gloucestershire press dedicated to publishing concrete poetry and similar work. The John Furnival papers encompass nearly fifty years of the artist's personal and professional activity and document his involvement with the International Concrete Poetry and Mail Art movements through correspondence, publications, broadsides, and posters.
