Abstract:: Joseph Brevitt Townsend (1821-1896) was a prominent Philadelphia lawyer who practiced estate law and acted as legal consultant to several commercial, insurance, and trust companies. The Joseph Brevitt Townsend papers supplement, spanning the dates 1800-1920, contains substantial additions to the original collection and documents the professional career of the Philadelphia lawyer. The supplement comprises 5.8 linear feet of legal and personal correspondence, wills and estate records, legal proceedings, legal account and receipt books, and other judicial and financial records.

Abstract:: The Austin Dobson collection comprises approximately six linear feet plus oversize material of correspondence, manuscripts, proofs, contracts, royalty statements, artwork, photographs, wills, genealogies, periodicals, clippings, scrapbooks, copper plates, and printed ephemera. The collection documents the work and life of English author and civil servant (Henry) Austin Dobson (1840-1921) and the management of Dobson's estate and literary legacy by his youngest son, Alban Dobson (1885-1962) and his son, Christopher Dobson (1916-2005), primarily during the period between the author's death in 1921 and Alban Dobson's death in 1962.

Shipley-Bringhurst-Hargraves family papers, 1692-1978 (inclusive) 1850-1920 (bulk)

Abstract:: Shipley, Bringhurst, and Hargraves are the family names associated with Rockwood, a Victorian Rural Gothic Revival mansion and estate that was built in north Wilmington, Delaware, between 1851 and 1854. The Hargraves were the last family to privately own Rockwood before its donation to New Castle County in the mid-1970s as a historic house museum and public park. The Shipley-Bringhurst-Hargraves family papers document the personal and professional lives, as well as the ancestry and legacy, of several generations of Delawareans associated with Rockwood.

Levis family papers, 1770-1891, circa 1932 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Beginning in the late eighteenth century, the Levis family of Delaware County, Pennsylvania owned and operated mills, manufacturing first paper and then cotton. This collection of Levis family papers contains a variety of documents including correspondence, bills, contracts, estate records and newspaper clippings, dating from 1770 to around 1932. When possible, the papers have been arranged by the creator of the material, or the Levis family member to whom they most directly relate.

Veale family papers, 1872-1899 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Veale family was British, but because of jobs in the military, spent much of their time abroad. This collection largely concerns Henry Richard Lobb Veale (1831-1908), an army physician, and his son Sidney Veale Byland (1873-1899), a lieutenant in the Indian Staff Corps. Material includes inventories of possessions; a sketchbook, possibly created by Bertha Veale (daughter of Henry and sister to Sidney); and letters sent to Henry Veale from a patient, William Aitken, as well as his son, Sidney, during his military service in India.

English legal documents collection, 1592-1810 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains 52 assorted English legal documents. Most are brief transactional records attesting to land sales, contracts, or estate settlements. Though mostly unrelated, there are a few small groups of connected documents, such as the five certificates of payment by Captain Roger Martin to various parties executed during December 1685. Beyond these transactional documents are a 1679 record of arguments before the Privy Council as well as a 1770 warrant for the arrest of Nicholas Gwyn, an Ipswich medical doctor.

The inventory was probably compiled circa 1915 by Curtis & Henson, auctioneers.
