Abstract:: Eddie Cass (1937-2017), was a British scholar whose studies encompassed many disciplines, but focused particularly on social history, folklore and traditional drama, especially mummers' plays. This collection contains twenty-two bound volumes of photocopies of articles, periodicals, play scripts, and manuscript essays, relating to all aspects of traditional drama.

The effusions, collection of volumes, 1905-1914 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The effusions, a collection of volumes consists of several issues of a handmade magazine bound in one volume. The magazine was created by the Philadelphia club named Ell Kube and was founded by a group of young Jewish men in 1904. There are seven volumes spanning the years from 1905-1914.

Benjamin Rush papers, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: Benjamin Rush, Philadelphia physician, in 1745 o.s. in Byberry Township. In 1768, he received his M.D. from the University of Edinburgh. He helped to establish the Philadelphia Dispensary and was a physician there until his death. Rush was also a member of the Provincial Congress in 1776, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and, in 1777, became Surgeon General of the Continental Army. He was a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from 1787 to 1793. The Benjamin Rush papers date from 1787 to 1889, although the bulk of the material spans the years 1796 to 1810. These papers document some of Rush's work with patients through invoices, receipts of bills paid, and correposndence; as well as Rush's notes on various medical topics, including the liver. H. H. Furness Memorial Library manuscript collection, 1575-1991 (inclusive) 1812-1930 (bulk)

Abstract:: The H.H. Furness Memorial Library focuses on the study of Shakespeare and other Tudor and Stuart dramatists. Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912) and his son Horace Howard Furness Jr. (1865-1930) founded and edited the Variorum Shakespeare and their library was donated to the University of Pennsylvania in 1932. This collection contains personal correspondence to and from Rev. William Henry Furness (1802-1896), Horace Howard Furness, and Horace Howard Furness, Jr., largely relating to Shakespearean study and the H.H. Furness Memorial library; notebooks; copies of speeches and articles; and other assorted items relating to Shakespearean scholarship or to the Furness family.

Abstract:: The Brinton family papers document several generations of the Brinton, Steinmetz, and Ward families, who flourished between 1760-1930 in Pennsylvania and New York. Several members of the family played prominent roles in their communities and included landholders, real estate developers, merchants, Civil War surgeons, medical doctors and professors, missionaries, a minister, an art critic, an anthropologist, lawyers, a judge, an engineer, and several authors.

Abstract:: This volume contains over 500 pages of essays, research notes, and quotations written by Philip F. Snyder from 1835 to 1893 on the history, structure, and cultural influence of music. The material is evidence of a long-term, comprehensive study of music conducted by Snyder and consists mostly of passages, articles, and extracts copied from a wide variety of works.

Clara Agnes Boulter mid-nineteenth century scrapbook from the American South, approximately 1843-1869 (inclusive)

Extent:: 1 volume (approximately 88 pages)
Abstract:: This antebellum and mid-nineteenth century scrapbook from the American South bears the name Clara Agnes Boulter on the inside front endpaper. The contents of this book are largely centered on ladies' manners, etiquette, advice, short stories, and fashion for women, though a significant component includes references to Confederate generals and Southern sympathies. Several items suggest the creator had ties to Texas and Virginia, and new clippings from Southern papers in Knoxville, Louisville, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Arkansas are found throughout the volume. The book features both fine and newsprint engravings, numerous news clippings of verse and articles, some original verse and art, and a few color prints. The volume includes two oval-cut albumen print photographs affixed to the pages, circa 1860s. One is of a house near a river with a water wheel and the second is of the Alamo in San Antonio.

George Adolphus Storey papers, 1848-1946 (inclusive) 1848-1919 (bulk)

Abstract:: The papers of George Adolphus Storey, R.A., prolific British painter and longtime teacher of perspective at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, include both published and unpublished books, poems, plays, fiction, essays, lectures, notes, sketches, inventories, diaries, and other personal writings. Also included are several items belonging to his daughter, Mary Gladys Storey, an actress well-known for her charitable work during World Wars I and II.

George Bacon Wood writings, 1848; undated

Abstract:: George Bacon Wood was born in New Jersey 1797 and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1818. He was one of the founders of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1821, but resigned in 1835 to become Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy at the University of Pennsylvania. Later he became Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine, a position he held until he retired in 1860. He died in Philadelphia in 1879. The George Bacon Wood writings are a small collection of Wood's lectures, addresses, and other essays, mostly undated, with the exception of one lecture, given at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, dated 1848.
