John Strahan essay of the William F. Jenks Prize Committee, 1889

Abstract:: The William F. Jenks Memorial Trust was established in 1885 by Helen F. Jenks to honor the memory of her husband. The trust placed $5000 under the care of three trustees who would see that the income from the trust generated a cash prize to be awarded every three years in an essay competition sponsored by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The essays were to concern some aspect of obstetrics, gynecology, or the diseases of children. Each prize essay was distinguished by a motto and the name of its author kept in a sealed envelope; only the winning essayist was named. The President of the College, with the advice of the Jenks Trustees, first appointed the William F. Jenks Prize Committee in 1886. The committee was composed of three Fellows serving three-year terms who would consider all matters relating to the selection of the essay subject and the competition winner. Abstract:: This volume dates from 1920 through 1933, and contains lists of entries for the annual Alvarenga Prize essay, as well as the winner. Each entry includes the title of the essay, its "motto," the author's name, and the status - either destroyed, returned, or "won prize." The Alvarenga Prize was establised in 1887 or 1888, when Associate Fellow Da Costa Alvarenga of lisbon, Portugal, left the College approximately $4000.00 to fund an annual prize in his name. Samuel Hadden papers, 1924-1956 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Samuel Hadden Papers contain the personal papers of Dr. Samuel Bernard Hadden (1900-1988). Born in Dunmore, PA Dr. Hadden completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. He then served his internship and residency at the Philadelphia General Hospital. He pursued his interest in neuro-psychology, earning attention for his work in group psychotherapy. While Dr. Hadden was regarded as a compassionate therapist, his views on the treatment of male homosexual clients are controversial as he found homosexuality to be an "experientially determined and treatable condition." The bulk of this collection is in a flat box contains assorted awards, certificates, and papers written by Dr. Hadden. An oversize folder contains two group photos of hospital staff, one at Philadelphia General Hospital. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

Mary R. McCarl typescript essay on Thomas M. Boulware, 27 April 1989

Abstract:: Thomas M. Boulware was born in Hannibal, Missouri, in 1903, and graduated from Washington University Medical School in 1926. Boulware was well-known for his work with the poor and Black communities in Birmingham. He served on the maternal health committees of Jefferson County Medical Society and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. In addition to helping establish the first maternity clinic for poor women at Hillman Hospital in 1935, Boulware ran the Maternity Clinic at the Slossfield Community Center from 1941 to 1948, and served on the staffs of Children's Home Hospital and Holy Family Hospital, all of which chiefly treated the city's poor African-American populations. Benjamin Rush papers, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: Benjamin Rush, Philadelphia physician, in 1745 o.s. in Byberry Township. In 1768, he received his M.D. from the University of Edinburgh. He helped to establish the Philadelphia Dispensary and was a physician there until his death. Rush was also a member of the Provincial Congress in 1776, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and, in 1777, became Surgeon General of the Continental Army. He was a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from 1787 to 1793. The Benjamin Rush papers date from 1787 to 1889, although the bulk of the material spans the years 1796 to 1810. These papers document some of Rush's work with patients through invoices, receipts of bills paid, and correposndence; as well as Rush's notes on various medical topics, including the liver. George Bacon Wood writings, 1848; undated

Abstract:: George Bacon Wood was born in New Jersey 1797 and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1818. He was one of the founders of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1821, but resigned in 1835 to become Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy at the University of Pennsylvania. Later he became Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine, a position he held until he retired in 1860. He died in Philadelphia in 1879. The George Bacon Wood writings are a small collection of Wood's lectures, addresses, and other essays, mostly undated, with the exception of one lecture, given at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, dated 1848. Abstract:: Dr. Thomas L. Bradford (1847-1918) was a practicing homeopathic physician in Maine, Europe and Philadelphia. While practicing and teaching in Philadelphia he served as curator for the Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital of Philadelphia. From 1896 to 1916, he collected, organized and maintained material for 35 scrapbooks of biographical information about homeopathic physicians.

Abstract:: Darrell Keith Griffith (1959-2012) was an AIDS activist and founder of the website CruisingForSex.com. The collection is divided into two series: Personal materials and AIDS activism. The personal materials date from 1983 to 2012, the year of Griffith's death. The series on AIDS activism covers Griffith's years of involvement in the social justice movement, 1985-1992.
