Abstract:: Established in 1855, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was the first hospital in the United States to care exclusively for children, and was key in establishing the foundations of modern day pediatric medicine. Medical staff members at CHOP have been at the forefront of innovation for decades, and their work has had impacts which can be seen to this day, in the form of the Isolette Incubator, the Measles vaccine, and its participation in The Human Genome Project. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Records (1855 to 2006) extensively documents the activities of the Public Relations and Planning and Development Departments from the early 1960’s to the early 1990’s. The bibliographies, published works, correspondence and interviews with several major figures in pediatric medicine, such as Doctors C. Abstract:: The College of Physicians was founded in 1787 as a private medical society devoted to the advancement of medical education, research, and guidance of the medical profession itself. In order to help fulfill these goals, the College's Fellowship have garnered impressive resources including a biomedical library in 1788, a medical museum in 1858, an institute for the history of medicine in 1976, and museum education programs in 2006. These resources are housed in a building constructed in 1909 at 19 South Twenty-Second Street. With its rich resources, adjoining medicinal herb garden, and ample meeting space, the College serves as a repository for the history of Philadelphia medicine and as an arena for the discussion of contemporary health care issues. Reports of the Honorary Librarian and Library Committee, 1836-1951

Abstract:: Established in 1788, the Library of the College of Physicians served as Philadelphia's central medical library for over 150 years, serving medical schools, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals. Today, it is an independent research library devoted to the history of medicine and serves hundreds of scholars, health professionals, students and popular writers each year. The Reports of the Honorary Librarian and Library Committee span the years 1836 through February 1951. This collection contains annual and monthly reports prepared by the Honorary Librarian, 1864 through February 1951. Also included in the collection are annual reports by the Library Committee, 1836 through 1939. Previously catalogued as 10c 21.

Abstract:: The Committee on College Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1935. Over the years, the Committee on College Collections worked closely with the Committee on the Mutter Museum; by 1939, the same Fellows served on both committees. The Museum Council of Philadelphia is the oldest and one of the largest regional associations of museums in the United States. Gretchen Worden was an avid supporter of local, national, and international professional organizations. She spent her career at the Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia and later joined the Museum Council of Philadelphia. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities, operations, and programs of various committees of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Museum Council of Philadelphia, and span the years of 1932 to 2006. Records of the Greater Philadelphia Committee for Medical-Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1963; 1969-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Greater Philadelphia Committee for Medical-Pharmaceutical Sciences (GPCMPS) was established by The College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1963, and the Committee held its first meeting on Aril 18, 1963. Members of the pharmaceutical and medical fields in the Philadelphia area formed the GPCMPS in response to the 1962 Drug Amendments of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Its "purpose [was] a broad concern for medical-pharmaceutical research, in all of its phases, and for all related matters that affect the health of the American people." In 1988, the Greater Philadelphia Committee for Medical-Pharmaceutical Sciences was disbanded because recent attempts to redefine and revitalize the committee had failed and because other organizations largely fulfilled the goals and purposes of the original committee. Annual reports of the Section on Ophthalmology, 1991-1994 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Section on Ophthalmology of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was instituted in 1893, the first Section to be formed at the College. In 1890, Fellows specializing in ophthalmology requested permission from the College to meet once a month to read papers and discuss topics relevant to their field. Although many Fellows were opposed to such specialization, permission for the meetings was granted on 5 November 1890. On 16 November 1890, fifteen ophthalmologists, including chairman William F. Norris and secretary Edward Jackson, held their first meeting in the College. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Ophthalmology. This small collection contains annual reports for the Section for the years 1991 through 1994. It was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

Abstract:: Established in 1994, the Section on Public Health and Preventive Medicine creates a forum for deliberation of relevant issues in public health, and provides information for the development of health policy. The Section brings together public health professionals from all across the region to study public health problems and assess potential responses. The Records of the Section of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (SPHPM) document the 1994 establishment and later activities of the Section for during its first 15 years of existence, up to 2010, through meeting minutes, correspondence, membership information, and programming. This collection is a rich resource for those interested in the programming for and advocacy of a non-profit institution related to public health issues. Researchers should note that the media found in this collection (cassette tapes) are not able to be played as the Library does not have the required hardware.

Abstract:: The Section on Medical History was founded in 1904. In 1905, the Section began holding meetings at which lectures on medical history were presented, inviting papers from physicians and scholars from a variety of backgrounds. By the 1970s, the section had become the sponsor of several annual lectures, including the Kate Hurd Mead Lecture (co-sponsored by the [Woman's] Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel College of Medicine) which was started in 1952 and the Samuel X. Radbill Lecture (1974). As of 2019, the Section on Medical History remains an active body of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Records of the Section on Medical History III span the years 1966 to 2004, and consist of correspondence, annual reports, lecture announcements, speaker information, and Executive Committee minutes. Abstract:: The Section on Dermatology was established by Lawrence Parish and Joseph Witkowski on December 22, 1981. The requirements for membership were "a professional interest in and a respect for dermatology." The Section held four or five meetings a year on Wednesday evenings; these meetings generally included a lecture followed by a cocktail hour and dinner. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Dermatology. The Records of the Section on Dermatology span the years 1986 to 2001 and consist mainly of correspondence. General correspondence (1986 to 1997) files contain a brief history of the Section, thank-you notes for monetary donations, correspondence with speakers, and some membership lists, but focus mainly on the financial situation of the Section.
