Clements Library of the University of Michigan. Abstract:: Leon De Valinger, Jr., served as Delaware State Archivist from 1941 to 1970. The Leon De Valinger papers contain his personal and professional records, primarily related to his work as State Archivist and as a historian of Delaware. His professional, administrative, and subject files offer a window into the varied concerns of the archives profession as it evolved during the 20th century. Additionally, his work to document, preserve, and promote Delaware history and culture forms a theme throughout his papers.

Abstract:: Elm Hill Private School and Home for the Education of Feeble-Minded Youth was founded in 1848 in Barre, Massachusetts, by physician Hervey Backus Wilbur (1820-1883). Wilbur left Elm Hill in 1851 to establish a similar but state-sponsored school in New York. His assistant, George Brown (1823-1892), took over the institution. The records of Elm Hill span the years 1842-1951. The records consist of Administrative records, Correspondence, Financial records, Medical records, Teaching records, and photographs and engravings of residents and employees.

Nineteenth-century American military collection, 1846-1903 (inclusive) 1861-1865 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Nineteenth-century American military collection is an artificial collection that contains 1.6 linear feet of American military records spanning the period 1846-1903. The bulk of the collection dates from the American Civil War (1861-1865). Additional records are from the Reconstruction period (1865-1877) and the remainder of the nineteenth century. There are also five items pertaining to the Mexican War (1846-1848) and two documents from the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers from 1856-1858. The records primarily document the administrative and bureaucratic logistics of waging a war and maintaining an army. Items include official correspondence between officers; orders; morning, trimonthly, and consolidated reports of unit manpower and supplies; food inspections; cargo and livestock manifests; provisions for supplies; and discharges and appointments of individual soldiers.
