Sir John Grenfell Maxwell Papers, 1824-1940 (inclusive)

Abstract:
General Sir John Maxwell served in Egypt during the British Occupation, notably participating in the Battle at Omdurman during the reconquest of the Sudan, and in South Africa during the Boer War. In World War I Maxwell returned to Egypt to defend the Suez Canal and briefly served in Ireland after the Sinn Fein Rebellion. Consists of Maxwell's diaries, correspondence, documents, photographs, scrapbooks, memorabilia, printed matter and newspaper clippings.

This collection consists of about 170 photographs, placed in an album, taken in India between 1930 and 1934 by an unidentified British soldier. Though the soldier is unknown, it is almost certain that he served in the Royal Fusiliers. The photographs in the album largely depict the every day life of British soldiers and their social activities, as well as providing evidence of British interest in Indian life and customs.

Abstract:
Donald Gray Brownlow (1924-2006) was an American author, educator, and World War II veteran. He wrote ten books on military history, including The Accused: the ordeal of Rear Admiral Husband Edward Kimmel, U.S.N. (1968), which investigated the culpability of U.S. Navy leadership in the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and Checkmate at Ruweisat: Auchinleck's Finest Hour (1977), which concerned the British North African campaign during World War II. This collection contains material related to Brownlow's published and unpublished writings, especially his historical work on World War II.

British Gurkha Mission to Nepal photograph album, 1947 july-1948 january (inclusive)

Abstract:
Following Indian independence in 1947, the British and Indian armies agreed to divide the Gurkha regiments between the two armies. British, Indian, and Nepalese delegations met in Nepal from July 1947 to January 1948 in order to discuss the terms of service of the Gurkha soldier as well as specific rights granted to them in relation to religion, rates of pay, performance and conduct, and leave from duty. This photograph album, containing 90 photographs, documents the three delegations' tour through Nepal. The images, probably created by a British delegate of the Mission, are labeled and the album includes photographs of people, landscapes, and historical and religious sites.

Abstract:
Potter was a lifelong British military officer who attained the rank of brigadier-general. He served in Ireland (1898), South Africa (1901-1902), Egypt and Sudan (1903-1913), and World War I (1914-1918); he retired in 1927. Consists primarily of Potter's lengthy correspondence with his mother and future wife while stationed abroad, often during significant British military operations, including censor-stamped envelopes.
