Henrietta Magoffin scrapbook, 1907-1914 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Henrietta Magoffin attended Bryn Mawr, graduating in 1911. From the 1962 Alumnae Bulletin: "She was a lifelong resident of Mercer, PA, whose Historical Society Museum was the family homestead built by her grandfather in 1821, and donated to the town by Henrietta. Her interests and activity in its behalf were extended to other organizations, the Red Cross, from whom she received a citation, the Library, and the United Presbyterian Church of which she was a member. She continued her interest in languages and the classics throughout her life." Magoffin passed away on November 8, 1961. The Henrietta Magoffin scrapbook houses Magoffin's "The Girl Graduate, Her Own Book" scrapbook. The scrapbook covers the years from 1907-1914, and contains a lot of well-organized Bryn Mawr-related and personal memorabilia.

Rebecca Mattson Darlington scrapbook, 1894-1896 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Rebecca Mattson was from Breckenridge, Minnesota. She studied English and German at Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1896. After graduation, Mattson taught English and Latin at Miss Bardwell's School (1896-98), later serving as principal of the school (1898-1902). In 1901, she married Philip Jackson Darlington and had three children. The Rebecca Mattson Darlington scrapbook comprises Mattson's one volume scrapbook and covers her last two years at Bryn Mawr, from 1894-1896. It provides a unique view of the early days of Bryn Mawr.

Julia Harned Pardee letters, 1935-1936 (bulk)

Abstract:: Julia Pardee (nee Harned) was a member of Bryn Mawr's class of 1939. While at college, she was highly interested in all campus dramatic activities, and was also involved in Glee Club and the creation of the yearbook. Post-graduation, she attended Yale University Drama School, attaining a MFA in Drama Production. After the World War II, she became a member of the faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance at SUNY-Buffalo, where she taught from 1946 until her retirement in 1984. She was especially interested in women in theater and created the first curriculum at SUNY-Buffalo to center on this subject. Pardee died December 9th, 1989. The Julia Harned (Pardee) letters house Pardee's personal correspondence. The bulk of these letters, often addressed to her mother or father, are from her first year at Bryn Mawr (October 1935- May 1936). One letter from her sophomore year and one undated letter whose contents suggest it is likely from February 1938 are also included. This collection...(see more)

Lucy Taxis Shoe Meritt scrapbook, 1923-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Lucy T. Shoe Meritt (1906- 2003) was an acclaimed archaeologist, scholar, teacher and editor who received her B.A, M.A, and Ph.D degrees from Bryn Mawr. During her life time, Shoe Meritt taught at Mount Holyoke College and the University of Texas at Austin, was a fellow at the American Academy of Rome, and served as the Editor of Publications for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Additionally, she was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and the American Institute of Archaeology. She received the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement in 1976. The Lucy Shoe Meritt scrapbook houses Meritt's one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook ranges from 1923-1929, and primarily contains correspondence, programs, and newspaper clippings. This scrapbook provides insight into Bryn Mawr athletic and social life in the 1920s.

Genevieve Thompson (Smith) scrapbook, 1903-1907 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Genevieve Thompson Smith was born December 2, 1885 in Portland, Oregon. She was prepared for college by the Portland Academy in Portland and Mrs. Hartman's School in New York. She attended Bryn Mawr College from 1903-1905 and the University of Oregon Law School from 1911-1913. She moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked in the Russian section of U.S. Army intelligence during World War I. In 1921, she married Admiral Norman Murray Smith. Thompson died in Portland, Oregon on May 20, 1974. The Genevieve Thompson Smith scrapbook houses Thompson's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains materials from 1903-1907. It consists of a large number of photographs and other memorabilia.

Mary Thurman (Martin) scrapbook, 1915-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mary Thurman was a member of the class of 1919. She was highly involved in SGA and sports. The Mary "Tip" Thurman scrapbook contains Thurman's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains materials from the four years during which Thurman was a student at Bryn Mawr, from 1915-1919. It consists primarily of correspondence and newspaper clippings.

Esther Williams (Apthorp) scrapbook, 1903-1907 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Eleanor Williams (later Apthorp) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1907 with degrees in English and Philosophy. In 1916, she married Robert East Apthorp and they had three children. Williams was involved in the Girl Scout Council, the Unitarian Alliance, the Million Woman's Club, and the League of Women Voters. The collection contains Williams' one volume scrapbook. This scrapbook, which spans the years during which Williams was a student was at Bryn Mawr, from 1903-1907, consists mostly of personal memorabilia.

Ellen Sudders Young scrapbook, scrapbook: 1922-1930 photo album: 1924-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Ellen Sudders Young was a member of the class of 1926. She graduated from Bryn Mawr with degrees in mathematics and physics. From 1926-43, she worked in the Sterility Testing Department of the Biological Laboratories of Sharp and Dohme. Following this, she served as a Department Head at Reichel Laboratory from 1944-46. Young also served as a missionary at the Scripture Memory Mountain Mission in Emmalena. Kentucky. Young's papers houses her scrapbook and photo album. The scrapbook contains materials from 1922-1930 and largely consists of newspaper articles. The photo album contains photos from circa 1924-1926.

This collection contains 25 Bryn Mawr-related scrapbooks created by King. The collection spans from 1929-1970, and highlights prominent Bryn Mawr figures, as well as faculty and alumnae.

Abstract:: Alice Knepper Kuppinger graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1936 from the School of Social Work. She was involved in the American Red Cross, and traveled widely with her husband as part of his job in the Foreign Service. This collection runs from circa 1930s-1960s, and contains a variety of materials related to the American Red Cross and the Foreign Service.
