Overview and metadata sections
Martha L. Carothers is a book artist and professor of Art and Design at the University of Delaware specializing in graphic design and book arts (typography, book design, bookbinding, and letterpress printing). Her work as a book artist has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her books are part of museum and library collections including the Library of Congress, Museum of Modern Art, and Cooper-Hewitt Museum.
In 1983, Carothers began teaching ART 309, "Book Arts", at the University of Delaware. The course was designed to provide an overview of book arts, teach students binding and other construction methods, and guide student work in producing creative books. Course topics have included conceptualization and ideation, execution, pacing, use of appropriate materials, craft, and attention to deadlines. Students in the course have learned hands-on application of bookmaking tools such as adhesives, utility knives, bone folders, and binding boards. Students have been permitted complete creative freedom in designing their final projects.
From its inception, the course has emphasized the reproducibility of books. Therefore, students have been required to produce two identical copies (editions) of each creative book as the final project deliverable.
At the completion of each course, Professor Carothers returned one copy of the project to the student and retained the other in her personal collection for instructional use. She donated this collection to the University of Delaware Library in 2016 to be used as a teaching collection.

The Martha L. Carothers student artists' books collection comprises over 500 artists' books created by students of Martha Carothers' ART 309 course at the University of Delaware from 1983 to 2016. The collection documents thirty-four years of student projects in the application of book-arts concepts and techniques. The artists' books are exemplary of study and experimentation in form, binding structure, papermaking, materials, typography, printing methods, narrative, and illustration. The works are arranged by their method of construction and range from common, classical, and/or traditional binding structures to highly unconventional structure- and sculpture-books. The projects incorporate a large assortment of materials including fabric, handmade paper, thread, rope, strings, plant matter, wood, metal, rubber, and plastic. Creators and titles of the books are identified throughout the collection, when known.
The artists' books are arranged into eight series corresponding to their method of construction: I. Case binding; II. Exposed-spine binding including Coptic, Japanese-stab, and signature bindings; III. Accordion binding; IV. Soft-spine binding; V. Non-traditional bindings which include spiral, ring, and screw-and-post bindings; VI. Standard bindings, which include limp, perfect, and signature bindings; VII. Tryptic-cover bindings, which include split-cover and flap bindings; and VIII. Structure- and sculpture-books, which include boxed books, books made from boxes, envelopes and files, metal and wooden structures, soft books, and unconventional structures/objects. A final series comprises ART 309 course materials, which include syllabi, class handouts, photographs, slides, and student conceptual mock-ups.

F1 art book, case-bound. Wider than it is tall, bound in a soft grey fabric. Its subject is the multiple meanings of the word "fly," including the bug, the type of zipper, and the verb "to fly. " Made in a scrap book style from many sheets of paper, several of which have come loose.

F4 art book, case-bound. Covers of grey paper with a black fabric spine and cover printed in green ink. Rough black endpapers have been added. Laser printed poems and illustrations make up the bulk of the content with some photographs added in by hand. The final pages contain a picture of the four contributors labeled with their names and rolls: "Authors - Denise Santos and Danielle Francoave. Photographs by Elias Naudain Simons IV." F9 art book. Bound in smooth black faux leather this book contains an interactive story of a secret mission, including cutouts, pop-ups, and flaps. The center of the book is hollowed to for a small "safe" with functioning dials that can be twisted to open to door and reveal a smaller book, bound in red faux leather and fastened with a large clasp, and containing an entire facsimile dossier about a war with Russia.

Laser-printed with text and illustrations. This book tells the story of a date with death: A boy diagnosed with a terminal disease must receive the "kiss of death" to die, from a grim reaper in the form of a beautiful girl. He insists on a romantic date before kissing anyone.

This book contains folded panels edged with Velcro that can be assembled in tandem with the cover to create a small doll house. The front cover has a marbled endpaper that has also been painted over with a dark brown. The book is subtitled "An illustrated guide through the phases of schizophrenia." F43 art book. Bound in repurposed acid washed blue jeans. This book contained laser printed text and images hand enhanced with colored pencils. It tells the story of a girl called Shineekwa who had perfect attendance in her art class until a sudden absence after apparently gaining weight. The end result reveals she had been pregnant. Original concepts credited to Mr. Gatti, art teacher, CRJH. Names have been changed to protect identities.

F44 art book. Bound in grey, textured paper. The front cover had been decorated with a pasted panel, hand painted in an abstract pattern. The spine has been embellished with three bands or orange faux leather. The ends of the bands are punched through the covers of the book and wrap around the spine. The book contains orange endpapers, blocks of poetry, and small hand stenciled images. Text produced on a Macintosh II desktop using Palatino 14 pt. Typeface reproduced on an Xerox 9900 photocopier. Pages are Howard 65-pound cardstock.

F45 art book. Longer than it is tall, this book in bound in a pale tan/grey fabric heavily patterned with a tracery of white flowers and vines. It contains decorative endpapers, and sheets of transparent, heavy gauge tissue paper interleaving green scrapbook pages. Text is laser-printed. Small photographs are held in place on each page with decorative metal corners. It depicts a girl and her dog, Sadie. Original text from the song "Sexy Sadie," by the Beatles.

F46 art book. Longer than it is tall, this book is bound in white paper with a red paper spine. The front cover has had a decorative sheet pasted to it, depicting a mountain scene with a drifting bubble, as well as the title and author. This book contains a forward by the artist in laser-printed text and reproductions of watercolor paintings by the artist. The paintings tell the story of a bubble drifting through a mountain range in the form of a picture book. Original images have been altered in Photoshop. Printed in Newark, DE, by Paw Press.

This book contains yellow endpapers, laser-printed text and images, and a length of black embroidery thread sewn through the pages. In the artist's forward, the book is described as "a visual interpretation of a song written by Johnny Cash."

F48 art book. Bound in layered strips and cutouts of fabric. The bottom layer is a wash from white to blue, shot through with reflective threads. The second layer is a black shape with silver threads on the front cover and a white canvas on the back. There is a seam there the two meet. The third layer is strips of the white of the black and vice versa. The end result has been written on in black-and-white pen and studded with rind stones. The book contains three dimensional stickers and half-heart shaped pages in a scrapbook format.

F50 art book. Bound in brown paper. The front cover has a rectangular cutout in the top center with a clear plastic pane across it. Stenciled in white on the reverse side is the title, displaying it backwards in the outside of the book. Contains transparent plastic sheets with black images printed on them. The final two images have smears of orange and red paint over them, apparently done deliberately at he time of creation. The inside of the back cover has an inset mirror panel with a smear of black paint on it.

F51 art book. Longer than it is tall, this book is bound in white canvas cloth. The cover displays a swirled circle of colors in the center, with the word "Color" outlined in black and filled in with a non-reflective gold above it. Contains reproductions of drawings and pastels by the artist, as well as some drawn from art resource materials. These have ben laser-printed into the book. The contents are scenes of people and architecture interspersed with bright, swirling circles of color.

It contains decorative endpapers and a series of black line drawings that have been colorized with bright, crayon-like swipes of color. These are accompanied by short lines of text by the writer Hugh Prather.

F56 art book. Longer than it is tall, this book is oriented in a clipboard style with the binding at the top. It is bound in brown paper with the title marked out on the top of the front cover in white. On the back cover, in normal orientation, are the letters YW, also in white. This book contains printed pages of letters and lines, accompanied by text. It places each letter by itself on the back of a page and below it, on the following page, a series of words that begin with that letter. There follows a ladder-like line chart of the alphabet. Upon reaching the end, the next vowel is treated in the same manner and the pattern repeats.

F57 art book. This small book is in the case-bound style, but consists of two small sheets of patterned cardboard, such as from a tissue box, held together at the spine with floral patterned book tape. The text block does appear to be sewn. The same book tape from the spine is used as a central decoration on the cover, then layered over with a pasted-on paper in red, with the title in white. This book appears to have been constructed backwards, as the logical progression is from the back cover, upside-down. This may be a deliberate statement, given the content. The content is a series of photographs of a couple, one in black-and-white, the others in color, where the woman slowly gains bruises and injuries. This is likely a commentary on domestic abuse.

F58 art book. This book in bound in heavy, smooth black paper. Its title is in white in the center of the front cover. On the back cover, an ancient Greek wine jar is shown in white silhouette. This book contains black pages with white text in the same material as the covers, giving the history and evolution of wine-making in brief. It also includes colorful maps, photographs, and illustrations. At the end of the book there are several white pockets that contain coasters with the artwork on them and the wine's information on the back. At the end a note states "this book is a product of a larger company, Two Rivers Wine." Sources are cited.

F100 Unconventional structure. Text from "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" by John Donne. Inspired by the shape of a fan, a large wooden frame supports a series of interlinked cardboard panels. Each panel has been pasted with a printed paper depicting a poem against a map background. When the fan is opened, all of the panels align to create one image.

F101 Unconventional structure. Created by Lunck Lady Press. Bound in a floral patterned fabric comprised of red rose blossoms. This book has irregularly shaped covers and oversized pages. Geometric covers of different shapes contain a series of black construction paper pages that fold on themselves to create envelopes. Some pages extend past the covers. A series of abstract lithographic prints are found within the envelopes.

F102 Unconventional structure. Heavy canvas fabric has been fixed to a single board. Four flaps wrap around the front to cover the enclosed booklet. Four buttons and two lengths of thread form a closure for all four flaps. Inside, a booklet of thick, white pages is printed with full-color copies of original artworks. These compiled images are decreased in size by 835 percent. The title on the front of the booklet and the colophon in the back are both handwritten in black ink. The booklet is held together with sections of book tape.

F103 Unconventional structure. A large, arrow-shaped set of covers are decorated with wallpaper and are bolted together on a set of hinges set into an internal wooden frame. This frame acts like a box inside and protects a set of pages. The pages are printed in black-and-white and contain images of wallpapered rooms, both finished and in-process. Captions and text accompany some images.

The book, intended for children, is filled with paper cutouts, ribbons, stickers, pouches, and other curiosities about bugs. Each set of pages has a small information box about an insect as well as cutouts and pictures.
