Fleda Brown (born 1944) is an American poet, scholar, and educator, and was poet laureate for the state of Delaware from 2001-2007. Brown grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with an early interest in poetry. She earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in English from the University of Arkansas with a specialization in American literature. In 1978, after a short period teaching secondary school, Brown was hired as faculty in the department of English at the University of Delaware where she would spend her career. Over this time, she taught courses on contemporary poets, American and English literature, writing poetry, and teaching English in secondary schools. She founded and directed the "Poets in the Schools", a program which brought University of Delaware graduate students to local high schools to read and teach poetry. Brown is the recipient of many awards for her books, essays, and individual poems including the Porter Fund Literary Prize in 2001 and the first annual Philip Levine Poetry Prize in 2002. She was Delaware's poet laureate from 2001 until her retirement in 2007.
