Jack Coughlin was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1932. He studied printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design and at the Art Students League of New York. He has taught art at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst since 1961. He is well known for his portraits of literary figures.

Three etchings, one lithograph, one color woodcut, and one postcard reproduction of Jack Coughlin's portraits of Samuel Beckett. Coughlin knew Beckett personally and made a number of portraits of the writer.
