Overview and metadata sections
Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) was the seventh President of the United States, serving from 1829 to 1837.
Andrew Jackson, who was born on March 15, 1767, in Waxhaw, South Carolina, earned the nickname "Old Hickory" during the War of 1812 because of his toughness.
In 1823, Jackson was elected to the United States Senate from the state of Tennessee, where he owned a plantation. After being defeated by John Quincy Adams in the 1824 presidential election, Jackson was elected as the seventh U. S. President in 1828. During the campaign, Jackson received support from Martin Van Buren and John C. Calhoun. This coalition created what would become known as the Democratic party.
After his presidency, Andrew Jackson retired to his plantation in Tennessee, where he died on June 8, 1845.

The autograph signature of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), who was the seventh President of the United States, is affixed to a slip of paper cut from a document.
This slip of paper also bears the printed phrase, "by the President," in all capital letters underneath the signature. Because of this phrase, it is assumed that Jackson affixed this signature during his presidency.
