Bookbinder Daniel Steele established his bindery in a building shared with the printing office of Charles R. Webster in Albany, New York. Steele lost all of his stock in the great fire in 1793.

Steele's letter is addressed to a New York City bookseller named Robert Moore.

In this handwritten and signed letter, Albany, New York, bookbinder Daniel Steele informs New York City bookseller, Robert Moore, of a shipment of ten bundles of scale board which is being sent by way of the sloop Ontario.

The letter includes a bill of sale and instructions to remit the payment to the sloop's Captain Green. The back side of the single-fold letter bears address information, a postmark, and an inscription suggesting the letter may have traveled with the ten bundles of scale board.
