Overview and metadata sections
Lucien Cyrus Boynton was born in Weathersfield, Vermont, on February 13, 1811, to Cyrus and Hannah Boynton. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1834 and after some experience in school teaching, entered Andover Theological Seminary in 1835. After his 1838 graduation Boynton began teaching again and spent over a year as a "pedagogue" in Delaware and five years in Virginia.
In 1846 he was admitted to the bar in Woodstock, Vermont, and in 1847 to the Massachusetts bar in Worchester. He settled in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, and lived there until at least 1853. Boyton married Sarah Judson Cole, of Bluehill, Maine, on September 15, 1852. Some time later, perhaps in 1858, he moved to Springfield, Illinois, where he practiced law until his death on February 14, 1886.
Solon J. Buck. "Selections from the Journal of Lucien C. Boynton, 1835-1853." American Antiquarian Society 42 (1933): 329-380.
This journal documents the life of Vermont native and lawyer Lucien Cyrus Boynton, as well as his introspective musings on religion, nature , and philosophy during the period 1835-1853.
In the journal, Boynton documented his own self-improvement and thoughts on various subjects including philosophy, religion, travel, education, abolition, and other important issues of the day. Boynton reflected on his own moods and the many literary and philosophical works he read over the years. Also documented are Boynton's experiences in two love affairs, several tentative advances towards eligible ladies, and his final marriage and wedding journey to Niagara Falls with Sarah Judson Cole.
