Overview and metadata sections
Middletown Lyceum, a literary and social club, was established in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, before the Civil War. It was "devoted to the advancement of Mankind." The Gazetteer was a handwritten compilation of local news items, editorials, poetry, and short features, collected twice a month. The editors rotated, often representing members of the Yarnall, Smedley and Darlington families. The articles include mention of well-attended meetings of the Lyceum and of the Yearly Meeting of the Progressive Friends at Longwood in 1859. The Lyceum was in existence at least until 1880 when it was included in a list of literary societies in the Pennsylvania School Journal.
