Abstract:

This collection primarily includes photocopies of receipts and contracts between Thomas Penn and various individuals concerning the Walking Purchase.

The Walking Treaty between Thomas Penn and the Delaware Indians accorded to Pennsylvania as much land as a man could walk in one and a half days. In 1737 Thomas Penn commissioned trained men to walk a cleared path and thereby gain strategically important land belonging to the Delaware tribe.
