Overview and metadata sections
Dorothea Blom was a Quaker writer, artist, and teacher. She was born August 6, 1911, in New York City, the daughter of Walter Adams and Dorothy Biddle Johnson. Dyslexic, she studied two years at the Walden School in New York City and then continued her education throughout her life with courses in many schools. She began her career as a designer of batik, followed by writing on design for various magazines and New York City newspapers. She co-authored nine books and taught courses at Pendle Hill and other schools in art history and art appreciation with an emphasis on the Jungian concept of growth and spiritual needs.
She married Christian Barend Blom in 1932 and became a member of the Society of Friends in 1937 at Chappaqua Monthly Meeting, subsequently transferring to Purchase Monthly Meeting. They had two children, Juliana and Christian, III. Her husband died in 1967, and Dorothea Blom died Dec. 8, 1991.
The collection contains letters from Dorothea Blom to her friend Liza B. ("Betty") Lewis, 1961-1975, reflecting her interest in spiritual, art, and social concerns as well as teaching and family matters. There are also a small amount of published writings and course material.
