Overview and metadata sections

Calvin W. Schwabe was born in 1927 in Newark, New Jersey. He earned a B.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1948, a M.S. in zoology in 1950 from the University of Hawaii, the D.V.M. degree form Auburn University in 1954, M.P.H. in tropical public health from Harvard University in 1955, and Sc.D. in parisitology-tropical public health from Harvard in 1956.

He married Gwendolyn Joyce Thompson (nicknamed “Tippy”) in 1951. In 1954, the Schwabes joined the Society of Friends. From 1956 to 1966, Calvin Schwabe was a member of the medical and public health facilities of the American University of Beirut. Beginning in 1960, he searched as a consultant to the World Health Organization. In 1966, he established the first department and graduate program in epidemiology with a school of veterinary medicine at the University of California, Davis, and served as professor of Epidemiology until his retirement in 1991.

The vast majority of this collection is photocopies of family letters, 1950-1978, sent by Joyce ("Tippy") and Cal Schwabe to their parents. The photocopies are bound together in five volumes. The originals are deposited at the National Library of Medicine. The letters describe family and every day concerns. Of particular interest are letters sent from Beirut and relating to the Friends school in Ramallah.

There is also one folder of original materials (mostly pamphlets/ephemera, with some handwritten notes and a photograph), donated at a later time.

The originals are deposited in the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD.

A wedding dress of a Palestinian Friend given to the Schwabes during their service in Beirut was transferred to FHL Relics. A later accession of original materials was added to the collection in 2023.
