Overview and metadata sections

This collection contains papers related to the publication of the Quaker periodical, Friendly Woman. Friendly Woman is a quarterly journal focusing on Quaker women's concerns and experiences. It was begun as a newsletter in 1974 at the conclusion of a women's conference held at Pendle Hill, the Quaker study center. Editorial responsibility for Friendly Woman is transferred every two years to a different Quakers women's group in a different city. The periodical contains essays, fiction, poetry, commentary, and art.

This collection contains papers relating to the publication of the Quaker periodical Friendly Woman. Editorial responsibility is transferred every two years to a new women's collective. Each publishing unit becomes a new volume number, and this is how the series in the collection is designated. Within each series, papers are organized by minutes, correspondence, production records, and special projects

The collection is divided into three series:

  1. 6. Volume 6: Friendly Woman, University Friends Meeting, Seattle, WA
  2. 10. Volume 10: Friendly Woman (Eugene, OR)
  3. 11. Volume 11: Friendly Woman (Denver, CO)

Donor: Lois Barton, 1995, and Mary Barclay Howarth, 1999. Accession numbers: 95-018, 95-034, 96-036, 97-037, 97-053, 98-051, 99-035 99-045

Loose issues gift of Gail Haines, 2022.

Editorial responsibility for Friendly Woman passes to a new women's group which may or may not have a formal organization before and after the period of responsibility. Each collective exists as a Friendly Woman body only during its term. In 1995, records belonging to Friendly Woman (Denver, Colorado) were deposited, with additional accessions following in 1996, 1997, and 1998. A computer disk containing subscription information has been transferred to FHL Computer Disk Storage. Papers relating to the Friendly Woman (Eugene, Oregon) deposited by Lois Barton in 1995 were also processed with this collection.

At FHL, those papers have been organized and placed in series; the series number is defined by the volume number of Friendly Woman, so that additional deposits as received can be easily placed in chronological order of publication:
