Overview and metadata sections

Alnwick Castle is a castle and country house in Alnwick in the English county of Northumberland. It was built following the Norman Conquest and renovated and remodelled a number of times. It is the seat of the 12th Duke of Northumberland.

This volume consists of a printed catalog of letters, original papers, and copies of papers from the 12th through the 17th centuries held at Alnwick Castle, compiled as a part of the third report of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, comprised of extracts from calendars made by William Douglas Hamilton and supplied by the Duke of Northumberland to the Commission, edited by barrister and antiquary Alfred John Horwood (Antiquates), together with one page of manuscript corrections tipped in at the beginning of the volume (p. 1); 18 pages of notes (p. 3-20) tipped in between printed pages 134 and 135; an 8-page printed booklet of transcriptions of Alnwick manuscripts having to do with officers of arms between pages 140 and 141; and four illegible early photoreproductions laid in the back of the volume.
