Born Bessie Theodora Burr Benedict in Brooklyn, New York to Dr. William C. Benedict and Elizabeth Marsh. Benedict was one of four children. She was a soprano singer who performed at various small venues. Miss Benedict attended Packer Collegiate Institute. In 1880 she attended the Royal Academy of Music, London. She married Edgar Dennis in 1882, they lived in Brooklyn, and had two children Harold B. and Theodora Benedict.

A scrapbook lacking covers and spine made by Bessie B. Dennis comprising programs and newspaper clippings regarding her singing performances. The book spans the years from 1876 to 1894. The items pasted in the scrapbook are arranged chronologically. The programs trace the vocal recitals and performances of Dennis from the age of sixteen to thirty-four. Dennis performed at churches, conservatories, and theaters in choirs and as a soloist. During the year 1880 she performed in London. Front cover reads: Mrs. Edgar Dennis née Bessie Theodora Burr Benedict. There a no programs or clippings for the years from 1881 to 1887. Items are pasted on the rectos. Four leaves are laid in the volume.
