Born in Needham, Massachusetts in 1791, Leland was a Philadelphia commission merchant. He married Charlotte Frost Godfrey in 1823. They welcomed a son Charles Godfrey Leland, American humorist and folklorist in 1824.
A volume comprising receipts of payments made by Charles Leland for accounts, rents, food, pew rent, contributions to the Franklin Institute, and "tuition and stationary [sic] for C. G. [Charles Godfrey?] & H. P. Leland to the end of the first quarter Nov. 24th 1832." Earliest entries were made in Boston, later entries in Philadelphia.
