Overview and metadata sections

The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry was founded in 1867 as "a fraternal family organization dedicated to the betterment of the American way of life through community service, education, legislation and fellowship" and is the oldest agricultural advocacy organization in the country. The Pennsylvania State Grange was chartered in 1873 and has approximately 9,000 members across Pennsylvania. The records in this collection document one chapter of the Pennsylvania State Grange known as the Davis Grange, No. 1466, which was founded sometime in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. The Davis Grange was based in Eighty-Four, a town in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and appears to be currently inactive. Works cited: "About us." Pennsylvania State Grange. The Davis Grange No. 1466 records contain materials related to the Davis Grange, No. 1466, a subchapter of the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, and date from 1925 to 1960, with the bulk of materials dating from 1930 to 1945. The collection is arranged in two groupings: the first grouping consists of six minute book volumes, arranged chronologically (dating from 1925 to 1960); and the second consisting of records pertaining to Grange membership and activities, also arranged chronologically (dating from 1925 to 1948). Materials include detailed meeting minutes kept by the Davis Grange secretary, Mrs. Earl B. Amos; membership applications; Cards of Demit (used when a member of one Grange chapter wished to transfer to another); and various papers and clippings documenting other activities such as Grange projects and awards. This collection documents the life of an agricultural community in rural Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania State Grange activities in Washington County. The minute books in particular are a rich source of information and include records of members, such as their names, their activities, their accomplishments, and notices of their deaths.
