Overview and metadata sections
The writer of these sermons is unidentified, but it appears that he may have lived in Pennsylvania or New Jersey around the time of the Civil War.
This collection consists primarily of 40 handwritten sermons by a single unidentified author who may have lived in Pennsylvania or New Jersey around the time of the Civil War. Mentions of Thanksgiving, the Constitution, and the Continental Congress also indicate that the author was likely American and/or delivered the sermons in the United States. Some of the sermons list locations where, presumably, the sermon was delivered. On the sermon in box 1 folder 2 is written "Hardyston," a township in New Jersey, and the sermons in box 1 folders 3-6 list "Darby," presumably referring to the township of that name in Pennsylvania.
The sermons appear to have been delivered between 1850 and 1879 and, apart from a few that seem to be from a collection entitled "Lectures on the Shorter Catechism," seem unconnected and cover many diverse topics based on Bible verses identified in the title of each file. Some sermons are labeled with multiple dates, in which case folder titles have been listed as a range of dates to indicate the earliest and latest dates indicated on each item. Any date range on the folders or in the finding aid indicates multiple deliveries of the same sermon.
The final folder in the collection contains a manuscript entitled "Teachers Meetings," which may have been delivered to Sabbath School teachers as an inducement to partake of teachers meetings, as it extolls the many benefits of such meetings.
This collection may be of use to those seeking information on sermons from this time period or on the Bible verses used as topics for these sermons.
Possibly a gift of J.E. Bender, 1936.
