Overview and metadata sections

The creator of this scrapbook was probably Catharine Gould of Dedham, Essex County, England. She appears to be the sister of William Gould who was the father of Charlotte Elizabeth Hasted, neé Gould.

A scrapbook bound in green leather with stamped decorative gold design spanning the years from circa 1788 to 1829. Le souvenir is stamped on the cover. The volume belonged to Catharine Gould as indicated on the verso of the marbled endpaper: "Charlotte Elizabeth Hasted from Dedham being the scrap book made by her Aunt Catharine who died Feb. 6, 1829, aged 78 yrs." The scrapbook is comprised of carefully arranged clippings, images, and collages. The clippings from various publications in England, consist of architectural images, epigrams, epitaphs, hymns, poems, prose, quotations, and verses. A few items are handwritten by Gould. In addition to the verses preserved in the volume Gould created collages throughout the scrapbook. The collages of animals, people, and scenes were created using partial clippings, cut paper, drawings, feathers, locks of hair, paint, and pressed flowers and leaves. There are several hand-painted flowers throughout the volume. A ticket signed with a wax seal for the trial of Warren Hastings forty-sixth day is laid in the volume.

Formerly owned by Charlotte Elizabeth Hasted of Dedham, England who was the niece of Catharine Gould.

Sold at auction at Cheffins (Cambridge, United Kingdom), Library Sale, October 18, 2017, lot 158.
