Overview and metadata sections
Edith Erikson Ives (1902-1988) began her nursing education and career at Philadelphia General Hospital (PGH) School of Nursing on September 1, 1925. After graduating in 1928, Ives began working as a registered nurse for PGH. She was promoted to Supervising Nurse in 1942. Her work has merited several awards throughout her career. Following World War II, Ives was awarded for her service in the war and the American National Red Cross gave her a Certificate of Appreciation in 1945. In 1959 the Philadelphia General Hospital awarded her a citation for over twenty-five years of service to the hospital and to the Philadelphia community. Four years later she resigned from PGH and eventually settled in Kennedyville, Maryland for some time.
Her husband, George Ives, was a ship builder for the Maritime Administration. He died in 1981.
During her nursing school career she manifested her talent to create as well as to heal. She wrote poetry to communicate her feelings concerning the daily life of a nursing student. Upon graduation, she wrote a poem, "Tall Oaks from Little Acorns Grow," for her graduating class. The typical day for her was a 7a.m. to 7p.m. shift including patient visits, doctor consultations, patient maintenance, etc. Edith Ives continually gave support to nursing students during her professional career at PGH.
A 50th year reunion brought together about fifty members of the 1928 graduating class of the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing.
Gift of Ruth Erikson, 1995.
