Joseph A. Woodward was born in Philadelphia, and graduated from the Pennsylvania Dental College in 1861. After practicing for a brief time in California, he returned to Philadelphia where he resumed his practice. Woodward was also associated with the University of Pennsylvania Dental Clinic, and was coeditor of the International Dental Journal. Joseph Woodward died in Philadelphia on October 24, 1929.

The Joseph A. Woodward Dental Record consists of one volume related to patient records, covering the period 1907 - 1929. There is an alphabetical index at the front of the book, with individual pages for each patient. While the volume does not provide any personal information, it does give a glimpse at early twentieth century dental record keeping.

The Joseph A. Woodward Dental Patient Book was transferred to the University Archives from the School of Dental Medicine Library.
