Overview and metadata sections

James Morton Boice - medical researcher and specialist in obstetrics and gynecology - was born in 1876 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended the Central High School of Philadelphia and Rugby Academy before entering the University of Pennsylvania in 1893, although he did not become a regular student until 1895. At Penn, Boice was an active member and leader of many organizations including the Pennsylvanian student newspaper and the Philomathean Society. He received his of Bachelor of Arts degree in 1899. Following graduation, Boice decided to continue his education abroad, where he studied at the University of Berlin and l'Académie de Paris. When returned to Philadelphia a few years later, he resumed his medical research, receiving an M.D. from the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia in 1904. Following graduation, he practiced medicine, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, and assisted at many hospitals in Philadelphia. In 1918, he was elected Secretary of the Philadelphia Medical Society and held that position until his death in 1921.

The James Morton Boice Scrapbook documents the social life of Boice and his involvement in a wide range of academic, professional, and social organizations. The bulk of the scrapbook pertains to his undergraduate life at the University of Pennsylvania. The scrapbook, which was compiled and put together by Boice, is organized chronologically, although several documents and memorabilia appear out of chronological order. The scrapbook contains small black and white photographs, invitations, programs, booklets, letters, tickets, menus, coupons, newspaper clippings, songbooks, cards, and receipts from Boice's life. Most of the items from Boice's undergraduate days at Penn pertain to his involvement in the Philomathean Society, the Pennsylvanian newspaper (of which he was an editor), matriculation, commencement, Mask and Wig, and athletics. The scrapbook also contains items relating to Boice's post-graduate travels abroad, his work at the Medico-Chirurgical College in Philadelphia, his involvement in local hospitals, and his active social life in Philadelphia.
