Overview and metadata sections
The Albert M. Greenfield Intercultural Center was established in 1984 to provide a center on campus for minority students in response to the request of the United Minorities Council. Rene Gonzalez was hired as the Center's first director, and established a twofold mission: to provide support for student of color and to foster intercultural understanding on campus. In addition to fostering intercultural understanding, the center was home to four major communities and helped establish ethnic heritage months and programs to celebrate the rich heritages of African American, Latino, Asian American and Native American communities. Since its establishment, the center's mission was expanded with the addition of Makuu the Black Cultural Center, La Casa Latina- Center for Hispanic Excellence and PAACH- the Pan Asian American Community House; thus incorporating the various cultures represented on Penn's campus.
The Albert M. Greenfield Intercultural Center Records document the activities of the Center during it's first decade of existence under founding director Rene Gonzalez, particularly in relation to the cultural and ethnic student organizations on campus, and its efforts to promote diversity.
The Albert M. Greenfield Intercultural Center Records are organized into one series - Records, which is arranged alphabetically.
The Albert M. Greenfield Intercultural Center Records were transferred to the University Archives in April 2004 (accession number 2004:049) and July 2004 (accession number 2004:062).
