Dr. Benjamin W. Barkas was a professional educator concerned with labor and adult education in Philadelphia from 1925 to the mid-1960s. The organizations in which he was involved were the Labor Education Association (LEA), 1943-1967; Temple University, 1943-1962; and the School District of Philadelphia Extension Division, 1941 1974.
This collection contains personal papers; correspondence and Notes, records related to unions and to the Labor Education Association; publications, programs and other materials of numerous unions and labor organizations; classroom notes, and other records from Temple University; correspondence and programs of professional organizations; correspondence, programs, reports and other records related to the School District of Philadelphia; correspondence and notes from Pennsylvania State University; financial records; photographs; and other materials.

Collection Inventory
Series 1 contains biographical data; course notes; odd-size pages of notes on many subjects.
Series 2 contains a history of LEA; minutes; finances; Union Leadership Academy; conferences and seminars organized by LEA; affiliated unions and individuals and contributions; International Education Project (1952-1960); correspondence; other programs.
Series 3 contains correspondence, pamphlets, programs and other materials of numerous unions and labor organizations, including: Pennsylvania Federation of Labor, ILGWU, United Steel Workers, AFL-CIO, Communications Workers of America, United Automobile Workers, Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, Textile Workers Union, and other unions; also, shop steward and apprenticeship programs.
Series 4 contains classroom notes; Engineering Science Management War Training Program (1943-1944), administration of programs and courses; Work-Study Training for Productivity Program (1954-1955).
Series 5 contains records, correspondence and programs of and professional organizations, including: Adult Education Association, Adult Education Council of Philadelphia, American Labor Education Service, colleges and universities, institutes and conferences, Joint Council on Economic Education, The Junto, Labor College of Philadelphia, League for Industrial Democracy, National Association of Public Adult Educators, Pennsylvania Association for Adult Education, secondary private schools, WPA Workers Education Advisory Council, and others.
Series 6 contains correspondence, programs, reports and other records. Some of the programs are: Operation Alphabet, vocational education for prisoners, national defense training, labor-management relations, citizenship for immigrants, and a Labor Education Project; also, administration of the Extension Division, newsletters and bulletins, and records of the Federation of Community Councils (1952-1965).

Series 7 includes correspondence and notes, the major program represented being the Engineering Science and Management Defense Training Program (1942-1943).
Series 8 primarily contains correspondence and publications of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction.
Series 8 contains records related to the Senior Citizens Central Association, Connie Mack Recreation Center, Health and Welfare Council, Inc., and other organizations.
