Overview and metadata sections
Sande Webster (1932-2022), an artist and art dealer, established the Sande Webster Gallery in the late 1960s. The gallery was located at 2006 Walnut Street, in Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square district. Sande studied physics and Spanish at Temple University. She is best recognized for her attempts to showcase the works of African American artists during a period when few galleries in Philadelphia exhibited African American art. She also helped organize worldwide exhibitions for African American artists and was instrumental in the founding of the Black artist collaborative Recherché. Sande supported the careers of several regional artists including Moe Brooker, Syd Carpenter, Arlene Love, Charles Searles, Ronald Lee Washington, and her husband James Brantley, to name a few. The Gallery closed in October 2011.
This collection documents activities related to the work of the Sande Webster Gallery and its founder Sande Webster. The bulk of the records consist of portfolios for more the 50 artists that exhibited their work at the gallery and other institutions nationally and abroad. An extensive artist portfolio for Sande Webster's husband James Brantley is featured in the collection. The records also include exhibit brochures, posters, flyers, postcards, programs, press releases; magazine articles; correspondence; a transcribed oral interview with Sande Webster in 1990.
