Overview and metadata sections
Selma Katz was born in New York and married Lawrence (Larry) Katz in 1936. They had three children: Terry Katz, Harry Jay Katz, and Philip Katz. They moved to Philadelphia in 1955.
In the mid-1960s, Selma Katz joined the State of Israel Bonds Women's Board. She launched the State of Israel Bonds Philadelphia Women's Division Home and Art Tours in 1966 and organized tours of private art collections, galleries, and museums in the Philadelphia and mid-Atlantic region, and Israel. In 2005, Terry Katz took over organizing the Home and Art Tours and in 2016 organized a trip to Israel for the 50th anniversary of the tours. Terry Katz was a founding member of the Sapphire Society, the women's major donor division of the Jewish National Fund, established in 1998, and served as National Chair. The Sapphire Society organized luncheons, teas, and talks to raise funds for a variety of causes, including the development of Tzukim (also referred to as Zuqim), a village in southern Israel.
This collection contains the records of the Katz family. The bulk of the collection documents the charitable work of Selma Katz and her daughter Terry Katz with the Sapphire Society, the women's major donor division of the Jewish National Fund, and the State of Israel Bonds Women's Division. Included are administrative files, bylaws, correspondence, meeting minutes, itineraries, invitations, photographs and photograph albums, pamphlets, and clippings. Also included are two scrapbooks created by Selma Katz's granddaughter, Leslie L. Barna, with photographs, clippings, and memorabilia documenting Lawrence (Larry) and Selma Katz's charitable work, hobbies, and businesses. The collection is largely organized in its original order.
