Overview and metadata sections
The collection consists of oral history interviews conducted by Anne E. Parsons between 2011 and 2013, partly in preparation for the book, From Asylum to Prison: Deinstitutionalization and the Rise of Mass Incarceration after 1945. The interviews focus on persons with lived experience in psychiatric and prison systems in Pennsylvania in the second half of the twentieth century. Interviewees include former staff members and those involved in mental health advocacy work. Institutions discussed during the interviews include Philadelphia State Hospital at Byberry, Farview State Hospital, Pennhurst State School, Haverford State Hospital, and Holmesburg Prison. The collection includes digital audio recordings and digital and paper copies of interview transcripts. Some transcripts may differ from the audio recordings. On those that differ, the following note is included: "some sentences, words, and phrases have been edited by the interviewee for readability and clarity."
