Overview and metadata sections
The Society Hill Synagogue began when a newly formed congregation seeking a worship space found a home at 418 Spruce Street, the former home of the defunct Roumanian American Congregation. Society Hill remains in existence today offering religious services based on Conservative liturgy.
The Society Hill Synagogue records consist of correspondence, board of directors meeting minutes, treasurers' reports, constitutions, bylaws, membership lists, and several photographs. Documents pertain to synagogue administration, finances, building restoration, and rabbi and cantor appointments. Of note are Religion Committee meeting minutes that discuss women in the minyan. The bulk of the documents date from the 1970s.
This collection includes preserved versions of the organization's website, available through Archive-It.
The collection is arranged into 2 series as follows:
Series 1: Society Hill Synagogue (Philadelphia, Pa.) records, 1969-1979 Series 2: Website versions in Archive-It, 2001-2020
Additions to this collection are expected. Websites are captured using Archive-It periodically, and the latest additions may not yet be included in this finding aid. For information on material–physical and digital, including captured websites–that may have been added since the last finding aid update, please contact the Special Collections Research Center.
