Overview and metadata sections
A manuscript account, later published, of Richard Somers Smith's life between 1806-1813, including his work for ship merchants Pratt & Kintzing, and an account of a trip to Sweden. Described is Smith's residence there as United States Consul through the War of 1812. The account also mentions incidents concerning the British blockade of the French West Indies and the Napoleonic Wars. Included are copies of letters from men who had read the manuscript, laid in and in the text block, including Horace Binney, James Thompson, John William Wallace, William Butler, and Charles Gibbons. Volume 2 includes a hand illuminated title page, a mounted watercolor of a European harbor scene, a mounted photograph of Smith's father, and a mounted photograph of Smith.
