Overview and metadata sections
The Philadelphia Lesbian and Gay Task Force was created in 1978 to promote institutional reform in law, government, education and mass media principally within Pennsylvania. Through the processes of research, public policy advocacy, and community organizing strategies the Task Force sought to create links with other minority populations towards wide ranging public interest projects to reach common goals. Task Force organizing efforts with various civil rights initiatives resulted in the establishment of Philadelphia local laws and Pennsylvania statewide executive policies to prohibit discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations as well as the establishing policies to prohibit discrimination in employment and educational programs for Lesbians and Gays. A major program referenced in this finding aid is Pennsylvania Civil Rights Initiative, begun in 1996 led to the eventual passing of statewide equal rights policies. Projects in media reform centered on Lesbian and Gay presence in commercial Radio and Television and began as Task Force created Public Service Announcements airing on major stations throughout the Delaware Valley and culminated in several Petitions to Deny FCC Relicensure to stations deemed to have too little minority programming by a Task Force sponsored research project.
